C2C: Country to Country 2016 – Maddie & Tae live review

C2C: Country to Country Day 2 features a really packed and exciting line-up on the main stage. The duty of opening the stage for the day fell to rising Country duo Maddie & Tae, who experienced huge success in the US with their feisty debut single Girl in a Country Song. Playing in the UK for the first time, did Maddie & Tae secure themselves a loyal fanbase to come back and perform for again here in the UK?

Taking to the stage at 5pm Maddie & Tae wasted absolutely no time winning themselves an army of fans. Whatever my expectations were of their performance, they blew the roof off The O2 combining tight harmonies, great songs and plenty of energy. They opened their set with Right Here, Right Now and the smiles on their faces matched their big personalities.

Over the course of their set the girls showcased gorgeous harmonies on Fly, let out their feistier sides getting revenge on a high school bully in Sierra mashed up with a bit of Loretta Lynn’s You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man), and entertained with the catchy Shut Up and Fish.

The duo proved adept at all styles of music taking on pop hits from Justin Timberlake (Mirrors) and Rihanna (Umbrella). Their Country twist surprisingly worked and they put their own stamp on the oft-covered tracks making them interesting once again.

The set came to a close with Girl in a Country Song, the track that is responsible for their well-deserved fame and critical acclaim. The biting lyrics make a seriously important point, and there’s no doubt that Maddie & Tae are leading the way for young women in Country music.

Maddie & Tae’s set was a real surprise and dare I say a revelation. Their album Start Here is good but I had absolutely no idea how engaging and enjoyable they would be live. With only a short set, they quickly highlighted themselves as one of the best acts at this year’s festival and one that you need to keep an eye on as they become huge stars.
