Ashton Lane interview

Glasgow duo Ashton Lane recently unveiled their new single One Kiss Later, which is released on Friday (11th March) to coincide with the band’s performances at C2C: Country to Country.

Taken from their album Nashville Heart, One Kiss Later is one of the standout tracks. The band will embark on a 15-date tour across Denmark, Germany, Finland and Holland later this year.

We caught up with Esther from the band to talk about the new single, find out what to expect from their C2C performances, and to discuss their plans for the rest of the year.

Hi guys. Where does this Q&A find you today?

In my home office checking on emails while my husband (and band member) entertains our two small kids.

Your new single One Kiss Later is coming out next month. Whatā€™s the song all about?

The song is about that fragile feeling at the start of a relationship where you feel you might have ended up more entangled that you meant to be after that first kiss!

Itā€™s the latest single from your album Nashville Heart, which came out last year. Are you planning more singles from the album this year or are you already thinking about the next record?

We will be releasing more singles from that album throughout the year, and continuing to promote it, however we are always writing new material so there will be another follow up Ashton Lane album, probably summer 2017.

Youā€™ll be performing at C2C next month. How important is the festival in terms of being a platform to get your music heard?

Itā€™s an honour to be playing the same festival as the likes of Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town. We are huge admirers of these acts and itā€™s great to see country music gaining more of an audience in the UK. We are really pleased to be getting to perform to some of those UK country fans!

What can your fans expect from your C2C performances?

Tim and I are performing the Saturday gig at the O2 as an acoustic duo and for the Sunday gig we are performing as a 3 piece with a vocalist and fiddle player Seonaid Aitken. We are doing a mix of songs from Nashville Heart and one or two newer songs too.

Homegrown Country music is really starting to gain momentum. Whatā€™s it like to be part of that movement and how far do you think we are from the genre becoming more mainstream in the UK?

I think that it will continue to grow as for me country is all about great melody and great story tellingā€¦ UK bands doing that wellā€¦ Whatā€™s not to like!

How did Ashton Lane come to be? Tell us the story behind your formation.

We are a family band, Tim Oā€™Connor and myself have been married for 12 years this year and lots of our early dates were down a lane called ā€œAshton Laneā€ in Glasgowā€™s west end, so that seemed an appropriate name for our band. Since we met we have always played music together, my Dad Graeme Duffin is also a huge part of the Ashton Lane sound as he produces all our records and gigs live with us when he can!

Where can your fans see you playing live in 2016?

All of our upcoming live dates are posted on our website at www.ashtonlaneofficial.com/event

What artists are on your playlists at the moment?

Kacey Musgraves, The Civil Wars, Ryan Adams and Chris Stapleton.

What else do you have coming up in 2016?

We have a 16 date tour of Europe in October/ November which we canā€™t wait for. We have toured Europe a fair bit over the years and canā€™t wait to get back this year!

Ashton Lane will be performing at C2C: Country to Country, which takes place at The O2 Arena in London from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th March 2016. Listen to Ashton Lane’s new single One Kiss Later below:
