Zombeavers DVD review

You’ll all be dammed if you cross these crazy critters.

On a vacation trip to her cousin’s cabin by the lake, a group of college girls uncover a deadly pack of beavers, infected by a hazardous chemical spill. These hungry, angry little munchers are looking for blood and not even death will stop them gnawing away at fresh human flesh.

After the likes of Piranha 3D, Cockneys Vs Zombies, Grabbers and even Sharknado, a knowing comedy-horror needs to have more than just a funny premise to succeed. Zombeavers certainly has the premise down. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the story, characterisation or general know-how to take this concept and turn it into a good popcorn movie.

It must be said, the humour does occasionally raise chuckles with one-liners and some quite ridiculous physical comedy taking centre stage. Passing scenes like the brilliant opening conversation between two men driving a truck were over far too quickly, substituted instead for quick-win nudity and cheap beaver jokes. More astute observational comedy would have served the film better.

The cast are a mixed bag. The guys fair better than the girls with Hutch Dano the pick of the bunch. He handles his role with a subtle comedy that’s always hilarious to watch – be it hammering his thumb during a rousing montage or leaving the heavy lifting to the girls. Rachel Melvin, Lexi Atkins and Cortney Palm’s roles are too thin and undercooked for them to do anything more with – other than look great in bikinis. Rex Linn hands in a good cameo as a local hunter who is more offended by the causal nudity of the girls rather than the killer beavers.

Zombeavers could have been a real cult classic but instead it falters pretty quickly. The premise alone isn’t enough to take it across the finish line. There needs to be more substance, even for a knowingly hokey film like this. There are laughs to be found but not nearly enough to make this work as it should.
