Paloma Faith – Can’t Rely On You single review

We are huge fans of Paloma Faith at EF, what’s not to love about the quirkily dressed Hackney diva, with the huge and unique voice? Can’t Rely On You is Paloma’s first single taken from her third album, A Perfect Contradiction.

The opening of the track has Paloma narrating in Italian, which at first listen sounds a little strange, almost as if it is an advertisement for something, until you realise that it’s part of the song. Thirty seconds later, we can hear the sound of creative genius Pharrell Williams work seeping into the track, with a thinly disguised Blurred Lines sample warming up the song and has a strong American feel to it.

As the song goes on, it sounds like we’re listening to an old r’n’b track, from the likes of women who have made musical history, conjuring up images of the likes of Aretha Franklin belting out those songs with raw passion. This is a huge compliment to both the talents of Paloma as a vocalist and Pharrell, who can do no wrong these days and seems to turn everything into musical gold. The tune lays heavily on songs that have been a success in the past and has an eerily ‘I may have heard this before’ feel to it, but with it being changed slightly. How very Hollywood of them.

The song is very different to Paloma’s usual style and it suits her, it’s nice to see her try something a little different. We’re not so sure that the narrative at the beginning or at the ending of the track is necessary, or that it adds anything more to the song. The song is a complete winner and we’re excited to listen to what she has come up with on the rest of her soon-to-be released third album.
