Fairport Convention set for Yorkshire

Formed in 1967’s ‘summer of love’, Fairport Convention features Simon Nicol (guitar and lead vocals), Dave Pegg (bass, mandolin and backing vocals), Chris Leslie (fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki and lead vocals), Ric Sanders (violin) and Gerry Conway (drums and percussion). Hailed as the originators of British folk-rock music, with a vast back catalogue to draw on plus frequent new releases, Fairport is able to present a fresh repertoire each year.

“We always enjoy visiting Leeds, and City Varieties Music Hall is a great venue to play” says Simon Nicol who co-founded the band. “Although we regularly record new albums our first love remains live performance. We are really looking forward to getting back on the road – in fact, we’re raring to go.” He adds “We have just celebrated our first forty five years and now it’s time to move on towards fifty years – Fairport is a band that always looks to the future… ”

The concert will open with a short set by John Watterson before Fairport take the stage. John will perform his own interpretation of songs by the late Jake Thackray, noted for his quirkily humorous lyrics.

Fairport Convention is at City Varieties Music Hall on Friday 21st February at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale, priced at £24.10. Book online at cityvarieties.co.uk or call box office on 0113 243 0808.
