Dancing On Ice week 6 recap

Find out what happened in tonight’s live show.

Kyran and Nina - Dancing on Ice

Tonight the 80s made a comeback on Dancing on Ice as the seven remaining celebrities skated to secure their place in the competition.

The 80s theme was a nod to Torvill and Dean who are celebrating 30 years since they performed Bolero and took Gold for their efforts. Where did those three decades go?

The show opened with the celebrities and their professional skating partners doing a group dance to Gloria Estefan’s Dr Beat and Duran Duran’s Wild Boys. There was leather, spandex and bright colours all over the place and our eyes hurt just a little bit by the end of it.

Robin Cousins was absent from the panel tonight and former Dancing on Ice judge Nicky Slater returned with Karen Barber moving up to head judge for the evening.

The first couple onto the ice tonight was Suzanne Shaw and Matt Evers. Last week was a bit of a rocky week for the pair when they lost their duel and stumbled during their second skate. In training Karen said that Suzanne is struggling when she comes out tricks whilst Suzanne’s son told her that she had to not fall over this week. Suzanne and Matt skated to Deniece Williams’ Let’s Hear It For The Boy.

What a fun routine that was giving Suzanne a chance to show a bit of comedy and personality. There were no stumbles so we think they’ll be fine this week.

Suzanne and Matt were awarded 32.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Karen said it was an exciting start to the show that celebrated the 80s telling Suzanne she was back. Ashley said that Suzanne always commits to the performance and gives it her all. Nicky said the presentation was excellent but told Suzanne that she fell short with her skating. Jason said it was a wonderful performance that was full of energy but told her it was too basic for her skills.

Actor Sam Attwater was next on the ice with his partner Vicky Ogden. Last week Sam and Vicky ended up in the bottom two again last week. His training VT showed that it has knocked his confidence a bit as he battled with frustration and disappointment. Vicky took Sam to see his family in the hope that it would give him a bit of a confidence boost. Did it work? Sam and Vicky skated to Queen’s Radio GaGa.

That performance lacked something. We’re not sure if it was the energy or the routine but something didn’t click there for us.

Sam and Vicky were awarded 31.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Jason said that Sam had an opportunity to show how much he wants to be in the competition but told him he was too in his head and lacked excitement. Karen argued with Jason telling him he was cruel and rude before telling Sam he did well tonight. Nicky said it was a good performance but told Sam he needed more Freddie Mercury. Ashley said it wasn’t Sam’s best performance but told him he needed to bring more to the ice.

Third onto the ice tonight was singer/actor Gareth Gates and his partner Brianne Delcourt. Despite not always impressing the judges, Gareth seems to have a big fan base keeping him in the competition. He’s now the only celebrity in the competition that hasn’t previously won the show. During his VT his mum told him that he could win the show as he was making the most progress in the series. Do you think that she’s right? Gareth and Brianne skated to Wham’s Freedom.

It was a competent performance but Gareth is without a doubt the weakest skater left in the competition. Can his fans keep him sailing through in the results show?

Gareth and Brianne were awarded 29.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Ashley said that Gareth is the underdog and told him he ‘Whammed it out’. Jason said he saw Bucks Fizz rather than Wham! on the ice and commended him for pushing himself. Nicky said the performance was great fun but told Gareth it was a bit slow on the ice. Karen said it was Gareth’s best performance so far.

Hayley Tamaddon came out fighting last week during the duel and wiped the floor with her competition Beth Tweddle. During her intro VT Hayley and her partner Dan Whiston watched footage of Hayley as a child dancing. In training Torvill and Dean said that they had given them a dark and passionate routine to challenge them this week. Hayley and Dan skated to Here Comes The Rain Again by the Eurythmics.

We think that she pulled that off really well. Hayley is fast becoming one of the people to beat in this series and she’s certainly giving it all she’s got.

Hayley and Dan were awarded 36.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Jason said the performance was a refreshing change for Hayley telling her she felt every nuance of the passion. Ashley said she lost herself in the performance telling Hayley she loved it. Nicky said he almost gave Hayley a 9 but there was a slight error at the end which lost her half a point. Karen said Hayley showed depth of performance rather than tricks this week.

As the next couple prepared for the ice, Torvill and Dean marked their 30th anniversary of Bolero with a performance to Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s The Power Of Love. They’ve still got it haven’t they folks?

Back to the skating. Ray Quinn was next with his partner Maria Filippov. Since the series kicked off Ray has been one of the best skaters in the competition without a doubt setting the bar incredibly high. In training he was pushing himself hard and revealed he was feeling pretty tired but a visit from his mum lifted his spirits. Ray and Maria skated to Van Halen’s Jump.

Ray is effortless on the ice isn’t he? He makes it look so easy and there’s no way he’ll be going home tonight.

Ray and Maria were awarded 39.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Karen said Ray’s performance was amazing and told him there was a lot of content. Jason said that he can’t fault Ray and compared him to the professionals. Nicky said the performance was a little scratchy in the jumps which is why he didn’t get full marks. Ashley said that Ray nailed it like he does every week.

Kyran Bracken was the next on the ice with his partner Nina Ulanova. Last week Kyran beat Sam Attwater in the duel which has given him a bit of a confidence boost. In his intro VT, Kyran unwound with friends and family during a rare evening of downtime. He admitted that skating had filled the void rugby left when he retired. Tonight Kyran and Nina skated to I Want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner.

It was a nice enough performance but we didn’t think it was as strong as most of the other couples tonight.

Kyran and Nina were awarded 33.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Jason said that Kyran’s wig has given him strength and control which is what he’s wanted to see for weeks. Ashley said she got engaged in the performance and admired Kyran’s determination. Nicky said he spotted a few mistakes which detracted from the overall performance. Karen said the performance unravelled and wasn’t as good as it could have been.

Last on the ice tonight was Beth Tweddle and her partner Lukasz Rozycki. Beth lost her duel to Hayley last week and was told once again by the judges that she doesn’t have the performance strength of the other celebrities. In her intro VT Beth said she’d found last week the toughest week of the competition yet. During training Beth tried to let herself go and have a bit of fun. Tonight Beth and Lukasz skated to Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

We spotted a slip there but it was nice to see Beth having some fun on the ice this week. We liked the parts off the ice too. Good job!

Beth and Lukasz were awarded 34.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Karen said Beth took all the advice she was given about letting go and told her ‘well done’. Nicky said he enjoyed the performance but told Beth the mistakes hurt her score. Jason said Beth brought something new to her performance telling her he believed she was having fun. Ashley said Beth let loose and had fun before telling her she committed to the splits.

The leaderboard for the night was:

Ray Quinn and Maria Filippov – 39.5
Hayley Tamaddon and Dan Whiston – 36.5
Beth Tweddle and Lukasz Rozycki – 34.5
Kyran Bracken and Nina Ulanova – 33.0
Suzanne Shaw and Matt Evers – 32.5
Sam Attwater and Vicky Ogden – 31.5
Gareth Gates and Brianne Delcourt – 29.0

Tune into the Dancing On Ice results show at 8.30pm to see who will be in the skate-off battling to secure their place in the competition.
