The Voice UK week 4 recap

All the action from the fourth week of blind auditions on The Voice UK 2014

The Voice UK - Tila & Tavelah

Our coaches are back in their red leather chairs searching for vocal superstars. Starting the show tonight is Jessica from Sheffield who auditioned last year and is back for more. Jessica tells us how upset she was not to make it through last time but how much more confident she feels this year.  Jessica, sporting some interesting shorts and a giant elephant necklace, sings Plan B’s ‘She Said’ and she gets Kylie’s shoulder shuffling straight away. Will is the first to hit his button, discreetly mid-dance move but it doesn’t escape the other coaches’ attention and they quickly follow suit. Ricky commends Jessica for singing with her Sheffield accent. Will says it was fresh, no surprise there.  Jessica asks if Will would fight for her and he shows her his fists. Kylie says they are no match for her heels. Ricky gives Jessica the twinkly eye treatment but she opts to join Team Will.

56 year old Bunny now, his friends call him the singing accountant.  He is worried he will disgrace himself by forgetting the words. Bunny sings the Elton John classic ‘Rocket Man’ and Kylie and Will think Ricky should go for it but as we have learnt Ricky is a hard man to please and poor Bunny won’t be joining us in the battle rounds. Ricky says Bunny sounded like Elton and Tom says it was too similar to the original.

On to Sarah, she has an adoring boyfriend and lot of cats. Boyfriend Bill is not so keen on the cats. This information, although interesting, tells us nothing about whether Sarah can sing. Sarah is our obligatory Dreamgirls singertonight and has opted for ‘One Night Only’.  She sounds amazing to us and to Tom, Will and Ricky too.  Tom points out that Sarah’s home town Weston super Mare is near Wales. Will seems to push Sarah towards Tom but she opts to join Team Will, taking him to 6.

Double trouble now with two sets of twins. Telah and Tavelah and Gemyni (who look exactly like Leona Lewis). First to face the coaches are Telah and Tavelah, they want to make sure the twin thing doesn’t make them a gimmick. They sing a funky take on ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ Ricky is the only coach to turn and the girls are delighted to join his team.  Gemyni perform ‘Fantasy’ and get the seal of approval from Kylie, Tom and Ricky. Ricky confesses that he must have ‘a thing for twins’ but that they were too good not to turn round. Kylie says she needs ladies on her team, well now she has two.

Glastonbury duo Vela now who describe themselves as ‘no spring chickens’ they perform ‘Homeward Bound’ and we definitely think that their voices are not strong enough to make it to the second round and it’s no surprise when no coaches turn. Shoe designer and opera singer Milly J also fails to make it to the next round despite some seriously Gaga-esque shoes. Milly presents Kylie with some chocolate inspired shoes; it’s unclear whether they are edible or wearable. Also on the reject pile is the man from Memphis, keyboard playing Charlie, who sings ‘I Can’t Stand the Rain’ the coaches feel like he didn’t quite make it to the zone and Will grunts a lot. Charlie looks confused.

Now we get a VT about Toms name dropping and this gem, his  best line yet this series.  “I do know a lot of people and Lionel Ritchie is one of them”.  Moving on quickly to  Jai, she sings ‘Never Forget You’. Will and Ricky turn is perfect unison and are quickly followed by the other two. Jai sounds a bit like Paloma Faith and definitely deserves the clean sweep.  Ricky says that he can’t wait to hear Belfast lady Jai in the next round and goes for a jibe at Will being on his phone all the time. Fighting talk! Kylie goes for straight out bribery and offers her perfume or spectacles! Poor Jai has a tough decision but eventually opts for team Kylie. Clearly bribery works.

‘The Mod father’ John is next. He is singing Jake Buggs ‘Lighting Bolt’, which is not particularly Mod, where’s the Weller John? John plays a storm up on his guitar but the coaches seem to be staying put. Despite his impressive vocals John doesn’t make it through. Tom says he sang the hell out of it but ‘it wasn’t fresh.’ Amy Winehouse inspired Melissa now, she has the same tattoos as Amy and says she idolises her. No surprises what Melissa is singing but will it also sound too much like the original? Her performance of ‘Love is a Losing Game’ does sound lovely and Kylie, Ricky and Tom fight to get Melissa on their team. Kylie says is sounded ‘smoky’ and Ricky thinks she doesn’t seem ‘mouldable.’ Melissa joins Tom’s team of ladies.

Now it’s Michael Ball and musicals fan Leanne, who has starred in Hairspray opposite none other than Michael Ball. Leanne sings ‘Skyfall’ and the coaches all immediately close their eyes. They all look very serious but they don’t turn for Leanne. The summary of their feedback is essentially ‘don’t sing an Adele song’. Ricky says she is made for the stage, which is convenient.

Closing the show tonight is lovely haired but terrible at sports Racheal. Racheal is only 16 and reminds us a bit of Leah from last year. Leah would love that pink leather skirt.  She performs Emelie Sande’s ‘Clown’ beautifully and we like her a lot. We think she sounds pretty team Kylie, which is good because Kylie turns first and is followed by Tom and Ricky (which is starting to become predictable). Kylie does an excited lap of her chair and we marvel at how tiny she is. Kylie really wants her and what the Minogue wants, the Minogue gets.
