Dancing On Ice week 7 recap

The Team Challenge shook things up on this week’s live show.

Beth Tweddle

Last week’s Dancing on Ice saw Joe Pasquale leave the competition after losing the skate-off to Keith Chegwin. We’re thinking that Keith has a guardian angel seeing as he’s survived the skate-off several times now.

Unusually the show opened tonight with Olly Murs performing his new single Army of Two surrounded by an army of dancers and the Dancing on Ice professional skaters. It was a pretty great start to the show!

This week the remaining six celebrities are pitted against each other in teams with Team Matt versus Team Beth. Once all six have performed their routines they will split into their two teams to try and win double points from the judges. Team Matt consists of Matt Lapinskas, Luke Campbell and Gareth Thomas. Team Beth consists of Beth Tweddle, Samia Ghadie and Keith Chegwin.

Kicking off tonight’s show was survivor Keith Chegwin who found himself in the bottom two last week. Undeterred by the experience, Keith is back with a huge smile on his face and struggling to keep a straight face for the rock routine he’s perfoming. With his partner Olga Sharutenko, Keith skated to 2oth Century Boy by T-Rex.

Keith and Olga scored 25.0. Robin said he loved how much Keith commits to every performance but said he needs to clean up the basics slightly. Jason said watching Keith was like watching ‘a camp Peter Stringfellow on ice’ and called him a ‘pleasure’. Karen said the whole panel admired the performance and said ‘well done’. Ashley said Keith was full of fun and personality.

Luke Campbell was second to take to the ice tonight with his partner Jenna Smith. Last week Luke managed to impress the judges and got a decent score. In his VT Luke admitted he’d struggled all week and we saw footage of him getting lots of things wrong. Skating to Train’s Drive By could Luke pull it together on the night?

Luke and Jenna scored 24.5. Jason said that he didn’t feel Luke was connected with the choreography tonight. Karen agreed with Jason reluctantly and said there was something missing for her tonight too. Ashley said Luke has progressed week-on-week but she missed the fun this week. Robin said that Luke is getting there but admitted he can’t disguise his discomfort when he finds the routine difficult.

Beth Tweddle had us on edge last week when she attempted a number of dangerous tricks during her routine. The judges said she didn’t give the performance enough attack; we completely disagreed as it looked magnificent in the studio. For this week’s routine Beth and her partner Dan Whiston skated to Caro Emerald’s That Man and added a bit of a Charleston into their routine.

Beth and Dan scored 30.5. Jason scored Beth the lowest with a 6.5. He said the Charleston needs more freedom and bounce than Beth gave it. Ashley said that Beth is applying the criticism she receives and admitted she was proud of her. Robin agreed with Ashley but said that Beth needs to be a little more carefree. Karen said the routine was polished and she thought it was a great performance.

Matt Lapinskas was next on the ice. Last week the judges said he lost something in his performance and his bravado needs to come back. In his intro VT it seemed that Matt is struggling with his confidence and was seen getting frustrated with Torvill and Dean over their choice of moves. Matt took to the ice with Brianne Delcourt to skate to A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke.

Matt and Brianne scored 35.5 giving them the highest marks of the series so far. Ashley said ‘Matt is back’ calling the routine ‘sexy and sultry’. Robin said the performance was sincere and agreed with Ashley. Jason said it was wonderful to see Matt back on form and pointed out how committed he was to the routine.

Gareth Thomas was the penultimate celebrity to skate tonight and last week he topped the leaderboard. With his partner Robin Johnstone, Gareth was ready to take some risks this week but his training VT saw him take a few nasty stumbles. Tonight he skated to Turn Around by Conor Maynard.

Gareth and Robin scored 29.5 despite a few stumbles. Karen said it was Gareth’s most technically difficult routine so far. Ashley said she liked the hip-hop moves at the start but said he needs to work on his upper-body a bit. Robin said the first half of the routine was brilliant but admitted the second half wasn’t as strong.

Samia Ghadie was the last of the celebrities to take to the ice tonight with her partner Sylvain Longchambon. Last week she was heavily criticised for not being able to skate on her own with the judges saying that she relied too much on Sylvain. This week Samia is determined to prove that she can skate on her own. Samia and Sylvain skated to Aqua’s Barbie Girl.

Samia and Sylvain scored 27.0. Ashley said the routine was a lot of fun and she enjoyed it. Karen said all the ladies in the audience will now want a Ken doll. She also said Samia has finally proven herself. Jason agreed with Ashley but said Samia lost her character by the end of the routine. Robin said he was impressed that Samia kept in character even when skating on her own.

Following all six celebrities skating with their partners, it was time for the team challenge. Team Matt performed to MC Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This whilst Team Beth performed to Gangnam Style.

After both teams performed the judges had to vote for the winning team. Karen picked Team Matt saying that team had more technical content. Ashley said her winning team was Team Matt. Jason said he was entertained by both but chose Team Beth. Robin picked Team Matt as he said they were technically stronger.

The leaderboard for the evening was:

Matt Lapinskas and Brianne Delcourt – 71.0
Gareth Thomas and Robin Johnstone – 59.0
Luke Cambell and Jenna Smith – 49.0
Beth Tweddle and Dan Whiston – 30.5
Samia Ghadie and Sylvain Longchambon -27.0
Keith Chegwin and Olga Sharutenko – 25.0
