Dancing On Ice week 4 recap

Last weekā€™s Dancing On Ice was full of shocks, particularly during the results show when Oona Kingā€™s skating partner Mark Hanretty dislocated his shoulder before they performed their save-me skate. What could happen tonight? Itā€™s anyoneā€™s guess.

The theme for this weekā€™s live show was ā€˜school discoā€™ and the celebrities performed a school-themed routine to Take Thatā€™s Kidz. It marked the first time the celebrities have ever performed a group routine without their professional partners.

Kicking off the show tonight was Shayne Ward. Heā€™s had quite a lot of criticism since the show started and his VT showed that heā€™s pulling out all the stops to win over the judges. In rehearsals Shayne was struggling with a snake lift which looked pretty dangerous to us. Dancing to Ricky Martinā€™s Livinā€™ La Vida Loca Shayne and his partner Maria Filipov took to the ice.

The judges gave Shayne and Maria 20 points. Ashley said she was excited by what she saw telling Shayne she was proud of him. Karen said the women on the panel really enjoyed the performance and praised Shayne for stepping it up. Jason said it started well but criticised Shayne for letting parts of the routine slip away. Robin said he agreed with all of the judges and told Shayne he needs to relax and let the skating flow.

Luke Campbell was second to skate tonight with his partner Jenna Smith. Last week Luke got savaged by Jason after his routine with the sharp-tongued judge criticising his facial expressions whilst dancing. In the VT Luke seemed determined to fight back and win the judge over this week. The couple skated to Boyzoneā€™s cover of Billy Oceanā€™s When The Going Gets Tough.

The judges gave them 20 points. Jason said there was a lot of timing issues saying that Luke canā€™t feel rhythm. He did kindly admit that there was a skill improvement this week. Robin said that Jason was right but highlighted that Lukeā€™s skating skills are really improving. Karen said the performance level needs work revealing that theyā€™ve struggled with it in rehearsals.

TV presenter Anthea Turner was the next to skate for the judges and public votes. With her partner Andrew Buchanan, Anthea threw herself into the rehearsals excited for the weekendā€™s performance. The pair skated to Donny Osmondā€™s Puppy Love, which Anthea revealed is a favourite of hers.

The judges gave them 18.5 points. Robin said Anthea looked lovely but that he was disappointed not to see Anthea skating on her own again. Ashley said she thought Anthea had fun and enjoyed the performance. Jason said that Anthea worked it too hard on the ice and he found it saccharine.

The showā€™s underdog Keith Chegwin was the next celebrity to skate. In training Keith struggled to keep his laughter under wraps as he tried to remain serious through the routine. It seemed that his partner Olga Sharutenko couldnā€™t keep him under control. Can he do it on the night? Keith and Olga skated to The Jackson 5 classic Iā€™ll Be There.

The judges gave them 21.5. Karen said that romantic Keith arrived tonight and she enjoyed how comfortable he looks on the ice. Jason said the routine was soft, lyrical and smooth and he liked how fully committed Keith was to the performance.

Former rugby player Gareth Thomas was next to skate. Last week he was in the skate-off against Oona King but survived after the judges saved him. In the VT this week Gareth promised to go all-out with his partner Robin Johnstone. Could he climb back to the top of the leaderboard? The couple skated to Brosā€™ When Will I Be Famous.

The judges gave them 23 points. Ashley said that she could see Gareth having fun and enjoying himself. Robin agreed with Ashley and said Gareth would never be the most graceful but told him to relax into the skate. Jason said the lifts were solid but told him to work on his arm movements. Karen told him to watch his posture but said he did well.

Current favourite to win Matt Lapinskas was next up. In the VT we saw Matt struggling and during dress rehearsal his partner Brianne Delcourt suffered an injury. Is the routine too ambitious for him? The couple danced to 5iveā€™s Slam Dunk (Da Funk).

The judges gave them 25.5 points. Jason said heā€™s not seeing anything different from Matt week-on-week. Karen said she thought Matt performed it brilliantly and admitted the track wasnā€™t picked by him. Ashley said that Matt was committed to what he was given and he did really well. Following the comments there seemed to be confusion over who picked the track with Christopher Dean saying it was Matt despite him claiming it wasnā€™t. Hmmā€¦

Olympian Beth Tweddle was the next celebrity to skate. Sheā€™s split the judges over the past few weeks with Jason in particular being very critical of her. With her partner Dan Whiston, Beth promised a fast and furious routine. The couple skated to Stepsā€™ 5,6,7,8.

The judges gave them 23.0 points. Ashley said the technique was great but she needs more of an emotional connection. Robin said the skating is getting stronger but agreed that she needs to step up the performance side. Jason said it was a great opportunity to show off her fun side but sarcastically said she mustnā€™t have one. Karen said the routine had more content than any of the other routines. Jason got annoyed and the two judges started to bicker.

The penultimate celebrity to skate tonight was Joe Pasquale. The aim for this week is to move away from the comedy routine and show that Joe really can skate. In training he seemed to be trying really hard so could he show a different side of himself? Dancing to The Things We Do For Love by 10CC, Joe took to the ice with his partner Vicky Ogden.

The judges gave them 16.0 points. Robin said that he needs to see Joe do more on the ice to improve his scores. Ashley said that he needs a bit of work but was entertaining. Karen said she must be seeing something different to everyone else and admitted she enjoyed it. Jason said that Joe tried to do something different and he saw a slight improvement.

The last to skate tonight was Corrie star Samia Ghadie with her partner Sylvain Longchambon. Despite getting a hard time in the press for her personal life, Samia has been improving week-on-week and is one of the strongest female skaters in the competition. This week Samia will be doing the headbanger move (eek!). The couple skated to the Spice Girlsā€™ Wannabe.

The judges gave them 23.5 points. Karen called Samia the dark horse of the competition. Jason said it was the performance of the night for him and alluded to their apparent off-screen relationship. Ashley said Samia had sass and cheekiness saying she did great. Robin said Samia was fantastic tonight and wasnā€™t put off prior to the headbanger.
