The X Factor: Week 4 recap – Live

Rylan Clark

After the eviction of MK1 last week and the mid-week birthday celebrations of camptastic Rylan, the contestants return to earn their place in next week’s show. One person who is already through is Lucy Spraggan. She will not be performing due to illness and like Diana Vickers before her has had a free pass through to next week.

The judges make their entry in spooky fashion with Nicole reminiscent of Morticia Addams with crimped hair.

First up is Kye Sones. His song choice is Robbie Williams’s Let MeEntertain You. His most energetic performance to date, it was a nice performance – he ran through the crowd to draw them in. Sadly, Robbie Williams he is not. He won Nicole over, Louis said he was not sure whether he had done enough and Tulisa said he had given everything. His mentor gushed praises.

Next is Louis’ protégés Union J. Posing on a car, they sang Beyonce’s Sweet Dreams. They gave a great rendition. Tulisa praised the vocals but said they’d played it safe – told them to up their game for next week. Barlow told them to come back with something different next week and Nicole thought it was perfection. Louis said they could be the next big boy band – well he’d know, he said Jedward would be big!

Nicole’s pet and birthday boy, Rylan, gave us a dose of Britney’s Toxic. Off key and out of tune he also gave us a bit of Mousse T’s Horny, and Nicole’s very own Poison – Louis was enthralled and even Barlow laughed when The Camp One was gyrating on the desk in front of him. He reminded Louis of a young Jean Paul Gaultier. Tulisa said that he always delivers to the best of his ability. Barlow said it wasn’t any worse than last week, the music was too loud to hear him sing and the dancing was good – praise indeed!

The powerhouse that is Ella Henderson took to the stage. Singin Evanescence’s Bring Me Back To Life. She was simply awesome. Gary gushed his praises. Nicole said this was the least favourite of her Ella performances. Louis said she without a doubt has a recording voice – he just didn’t like her hair.

Cheese factory and granny favourite Chris Maloney took his pumpkin hued face to the stage. Singing Cutting Crew’s(I Just) Died in Your Arms, he gave a great version – vocally perfect with his own cheesy aroma. Nicole said she felt she was watching an 80’s Halloween pop-opera – she said it was fun (for tonight). Tulisa liked the staging and said the vocals were strong. She started having a go at Gary to which he responded ‘I don’t know what offends me more, your comments or your fag ash breath!’ – ooh! Handbags!

The other next big boy band, District3. After last week’s amazing performance would this week be a trick or a treat? Singing the Police’s Watching You and Ne-Yo’s Beautiful Monster. It was a solid performance with some dancing. Tulisa said she loved it but thought the vocals suffered when Ne-Yo kicked in. Gary said they’d taken a leap back this week and Nicole agreed.

Jahmene, of Swindon’s Got Talent fame, was next. Singing Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly he just delivered. Haunting. Poignant. Perfect. Louis said he was the best singer in the competition. Tulisa couldn’t find anything negative to say and Gary said it was effortless. Nicole said it was Jahmazing! She has a way with words.

Tulisa introduced the last of the girls, Jade Ellis. She sang Sugababes’ Freak Like Me. Gary said she looked like a popstar but the vocals were a bit weak. Nicole said she didn’t get the performance tonight and said it was frightening. Louis said it was more style than substance.

Last up – James Arthur. With promises of a haunting performance from his mentor, performing Eurithmics’s Sweet Dreams, he brought the tone down and gave it the vibe of the classic Feeling Good while still managing to be haunting. The best performance of the night we thought! Louis said that record deal could not be too far away. Tulisa said he was one of the most relevant performers in the competition. Gary was wowed and said it was the performance of someone who wanted to win this contest. Nicole said he was the difference and that he is an international recording artist.

Tune in to ITV tomorrow, 8pm, ghouls and goblins for the results.
