Miranda (Serena Grandi) is the landlady of a small tavern and she’s the object of lust for many of the men in her town. Her husband has been missing since World War II and despite her promises to wait for him to return, Miranda can’t help indulging the men around her. As she starts to consider taking a new husband, she decides the best way is to test out several men who are battling for her affection to see if they fulfil her voracious appetite.
Tinto Brass is an Italian film director and screenwriter, who has become synonymous with producing erotic content. Active since the early 60s, Brass most famously made ‘Caligula’ with Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren in 1979. Following the controversy that film brought with it, Brass doubled down on the sex in his films and a lot of his work could be best-described as soft porn. ‘Miranda’, released in 1985, has been released by Cult Films and given a remaster. The film is available for the first time in Full HD 1080p, and for this release it’s uncut so viewers can see the film as Brass intended.
Where to start with ‘Miranda’? The film’s storyline is so thin and vague, that you’d be wasting your time if you were trying to look for any depth. The aim of Brass here is to get lead star Serena Grandi naked for as long as possible, depicting her in sex scenes with a variety of different men. The content here is explicit and definitely not for those who are a little prudish. ‘Miranda’ sets out its stall immediately with the titular character rubbing her private parts against the bottom of Berto (Andrea Occhipinti), and the gratuitous nudity and sex continues from there.
At best you could call the film an erotic romp and at worst you could dismiss it as nothing more than pure titillation. Brass has become iconic for the films he made but ‘Miranda’ isn’t a classic. The film pushes the boundaries of what was acceptable at the time, and honestly I’m not sure that most audiences in the modern day are ready for a lot of the content they’ll see when watching. It’s hard to comment on the performances of the cast as the script is as bawdy and basic as you’d expect from a film that’s designed purely to arouse.
Extras on this new release include an interview with director Tinto Brass, a theatrical trailer and new and improved English subtitles.
‘Miranda’ will have an audience but I don’t think that audience is me. Had the film tried harder to deliver a story, I may have been warmer towards it but it’s just an endless stream of sexual encounters. There’s no character development, and nothing to see her other than heaving breasts, bare bottoms and genitals. If all you want to see is a voluptuous woman having sex with different men, then you’ll find plenty to enjoy with ‘Miranda’.
