Sugarland is a Grammy-winning country music duo comprised of singer-songwriter Jennifer Nettles and multi-instrumentalist Kristian Bush. Formed in 2002, the duo quickly rose to fame with their unique blend of country, pop, and rock influences, creating a sound that resonated with a broad audience. Their 2004 debut album ‘Twice the Speed of Life' introduced the world to their hit single ‘Baby Girl' which set the stage for their future success. Sugarland continued to dominate the charts with subsequent albums, including ‘Enjoy the Ride' (2006) and ‘Love on the Inside' (2008), both of which featured multiple number-one hits like ‘Stay' and ‘All I Want to Do.' Their powerful songwriting, coupled with Nettles' dynamic vocals and Bush's instrumental versatility, solidified their place as one of the most influential acts in country music.
Throughout their career, Sugarland has earned numerous awards, including multiple Grammy, CMA, and ACM awards, further establishing their legacy in the music industry. After taking a hiatus in 2012 to pursue solo projects, the duo made a highly anticipated return in 2018 with the release of their album ‘Bigger' which was met with critical acclaim and demonstrated their continued relevance in the ever-evolving country music landscape. Known for their heartfelt lyrics, energetic performances, and ability to connect with fans on a deep emotional level, Sugarland remains a beloved and enduring force in country music.
New EP ‘There Goes the Neighborhood' channels everything we've come to known and love about the duo's music and adds a little extra Soul, Blues & Southern style into the mix at the same time. Think Atlanta meets New Orleans meets Broadway for a touchstone as to where the Sugarland of 2024 currently resides. The throwaway Pop vibes of ‘All I Wanna Do' and ‘It Happens' have been built on top of with a mature, wise and yet still sharp and sarcastic view of life. There are four songs on the EP – the country music-leaning anti-gentrifcation song, a love song, a break up song and a funky little sexy times song – between them all there's a lovely breadth & diversity of sonics and messages that represent who Sugarland are in 2024.
The title track, ‘There Goes the Neighborhood,' kicks off the EP with a funky, Southern-infused critique of gentrification. Jennifer Nettles' powerhouse vocals, paired with Kristian Bush's gritty guitar work, bring the song to life as they lament the erasure of history with lines like “Shady Acres ain’t got no trees!” The track builds from funky verses to an anthemic, singalong chorus, showcasing Sugarland’s knack for combining humour, wisdom, and a touch of attitude in their music.
The EP continues to explore a range of emotions and sounds, from the sultry ‘Temporary Feeling' where Nettles pledges eternal love over a bass-heavy, bluesy groove, to the poignant ballad ‘Georgia is Yours,' which finds her channeling a mix of Southern diva and Broadway vibes as she sings about the heartache of not being able to move on after a breakup. ‘Get Your Hopes Up' rounds out the collection with a funky, pop-country vibe that recalls Sugarland's early hits like ‘It Happens' and ‘All I Wanna Do.' Bush’s 90s-inspired guitar riffs and Nettles’ sharp, playful vocals make it an instant earworm, full of the duo's trademark fun and energy. With themes of love, loss, and the passage of time, ‘There Goes the Neighborhood' is classic Sugarland, enhanced by the wisdom and experience that only comes with age, making it a must-listen for fans old and new. My only gripe is that there are only four songs in this collection, meaning that it is over before you've really got going, but then all the best artists leave them wanting more, right?
