Quilting teacher Amy (Ferelith Young) is working towards trying to win a fellowship when Liam (Harmon Walsh), a firefighter, unexpectedly comes into her life. Liam informs Amy that the Community Centre she works at is in violation of fire regulations and if they don’t fix them in 3 days, the building will be deemed unsafe and closed down. As Amy scrambles to raise the $15,000 they need to save the centre, Liam agrees to help her in exchange for quilting lessons so he can make a Christmas quilt for his sister’s upcoming wedding.
For a Christmas movie, ‘A Cozy Christmas Quilt’ actually has quite a lot going on plot wise. Of course, the expected love story is there between Amy and Liam but each of the characters has their own storyline too. Amy is desperately trying to raise money to stop the closure of the Community Centre while at the same time pulling together her submission to try and win a prestigious fellowship. Liam is trying to help Amy raise money but he is also trying to honour family tradition by making a quilt to give his sister as a wedding gift.

The initial friction between Amy and Liam vanishes quickly, leaving them to get to know one another as they forge an unexpected friendship. As they grow closer, Amy has no idea that Liam is planning to move away at the same time as his sister and her soon-to-be husband. The two central characters end up juggling a lot as they try to hit their respective goals, but they do manage time to start falling for one another. What does that mean for Liam’s travel plans? Well you’ll have to watch the movie to find that out!
Christmas movies live and die by the chemistry between the leads and thankfully it’s there between Ferelith Young and Harmon Walsh. While it’s not the strongest chemistry match we’ve seen during Great American Christmas 2024, it’s evident enough to make the film work. Young is the more endearing of the two, giving the audience a character they can really get behind. Walsh is great in his role but he doesn’t get to show all that much range, with the script too often relying on his handsome looks.

‘A Cozy Christmas Quilt’ isn’t among the stronger movies showing as part of Great American Christmas 2024 but it’s solid enough to pass by 87 minutes of your time. The performances are decent and there is more plot than you might expect; two things that definitely go in its favour. The film also focuses in on family and traditions, which will resonate strongly with the audience. ‘A Cozy Christmas Quilt’ may not get added to our ‘must-watch’ pile for next year’s Christmas movie rewatch but it’s solid entertainment.
