The Black Crowes are back with renewed fire, announcing their new studio album ‘A Pound of Feathers,' set for release on March 13 via Silver Arrow Records. Produced by Jay Joyce, the album finds the legendary rock icons pushing their signature blend of blues, soul and rock into sharper, more electrifying territory. Now four decades into a career that has shaped modern rock and earned them 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations, the band sound anything but reflective. Instead, ‘A Pound of Feathers' captures a group driven by instinct, experimentation and creative urgency.
Recorded in Nashville over an intense eight-to-ten-day stretch, the album grew out of the momentum of 2024’s acclaimed ‘Happiness Bastards.' Chris Robinson describes the sessions as instinct-led and spontaneous, with the band leaning into the energy of the moment rather than overthinking the process. Rich Robinson, who co-wrote the album with his brother, credits that freedom for reigniting the band’s creative spark, resulting in music that feels harder, more jagged and more alive while staying true to the core of what has always defined The Black Crowes.
That balance between heritage and reinvention runs throughout ‘A Pound of Feathers.' The record marries the rugged swagger that defined the band’s early years with new rhythmic textures and a willingness to explore unfamiliar ground. Joyce’s production brings clarity and muscle in equal measure, capturing a band fully locked in and unafraid to take risks, guided by deep musical empathy and a shared vision.
The album’s title hints at its emotional duality, playing on the contrast between lightness and weight, beauty and consequence. Across 11 tracks, the Robinson brothers explore that tension with honesty and grit, shifting effortlessly between moments of grace and hard truths. It is a record shaped by experience but powered by the same hunger that first put the band on the map.
Two songs released alongside the announcement offer a clear snapshot of what’s to come. The opener ‘Profane Prophecy' bursts out of the gate with sharp-edged funk and playful swagger, setting the tone for the album’s fearless attitude. ‘Pharmacy Chronicles' takes a darker, more reflective path, slowly building as it confronts personal vices and the idea that real freedom begins with self-awareness rather than escape.
Following the Grammy-nominated success of ‘Happiness Bastards,' ‘A Pound of Feathers' further cements The Black Crowes as a vital force in modern rock. It is not a nostalgic victory lap, but a statement of intent from a band still evolving, still pushing forward and still capable of sounding dangerous, relevant and inspired decades into their journey.
