‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ review: Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman deliver one of the most enjoyable comic-book movies ever

It’s been a long time coming but thankfully the third Deadpool movie is here! And what a way to come back – with Ryan Reynolds resurrecting one of Marvel’s greatest ever live-action superheroes Wolverine (played by the legendary Hugh Jackman). Going into this you just know that this is going to be a match made in heaven, with both superstars giving fans exactly what they want and finally uniting an iconic comic-book duo onto blockbuster live-action cinema screens. And now that it’s released it’s safe to say that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ delivers one of the most enjoyable comic book movies ever made.

The plot was cleverly kept under wraps for all of its trailer campaign, which means that seeing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ cold without any spoilers is such a wonderful, memorable and exciting cinema-going experience. To keep things brief, I’ll just say that the film involves Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) having to seek the help of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) to save the lives of his friends, and the fate of his world. To say more would just ruin the fun.

Most comic book fans expected to see more than a little multiverse jumping, with familiar faces from the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and beyond) bound to make a cameo appearances. But as great as we thought it potentially could be, the cameo game in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is simply off the charts excellent. It’s better than all of the MCU reveals of the past few years combined and utilises some very familiar and beloved characters from Marvel’s complete movie history to deliver genuine jaw-dropping moments. I won’t spoil any here but suffice to say that this movie is crowd-pleasing in the very best possible way.

These additions of new cameo characters are superb and will rightly grab the headlines (given that they are just so incredibly unexpected and awesome), but it’s the strength of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s chemistry that really supports the film as a whole. The two actors are sensational in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, giving us what we have craved to see since these beloved characters were first portrayed in live-action. We are all here for the banter between Logan and Deadpool, something that is worth the admission price alone! Both bring their A-game to the table, bouncing off one another’s quirks and characterisations to give audiences a really satisfying and enjoyable viewing experience. This is one of the most entertaining comic-book films you’ll ever see.

The movie has been made with blockbuster summer status in mind, and this delivers spectacle and grandeur in every frame. So much so that you really have to witness ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ in as big a screen as you can. I saw the film in 3D IMAX which is absolutely the definitive way to watch this movie. It was sensational, with the crystal clear and larger-than-life IMAX images married perfectly with 3D to give audiences a truly absorbing experience. The depth of clarity to the 3D is also stunning. The format has fallen a little out of favour in recent years but when it’s done right like it is here, you are completely taken away by it and transported to another world. I’ve always loved seeing films in IMAX, but ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ really uses the format to great effect, especially for the big fight sequences and set-pieces.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is an utter joy from start to finish. I absolutely loved it – especially all of the nods and winks to what’s come before. It also gives a great platform for Hugh Jackman to once again be celebrated as one of the greatest character-actors of his generation. What he has delivered to the role of Logan/Wolverine these past 24 years is nothing short of amazing. And Ryan Reynolds deserves huge praise for bringing all of this so beautifully together. Reynolds totally understands what fans want and delivers this to us in a perfectly gift-wrapped box full of humour, action and sincerity. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is a massive success and one of the best cinema experiences you’ll have this year. It’s simply unmissable.
