Walter Presents will launch the first season of ‘Blackwater' on Channel 4 and C4 Streaming in January 2025.
The series stars Pernilla August, Alba August, Rolf Lassgård, Magnus Krepper and Alma Pöysti. it is created by Maren Louise Käehne and Karin Arrhenius.
Midsummer 1973 in the town of Blackwater in North Sweden. The longest day of the year, where the sun never sets, and the night is as bright as day.
Annie arrives by bus with her six-year-old daughter, Mia. They are to join Annie’s boyfriend Dan in a remote commune. When Dan does not pick them up as agreed, Annie set out on a nightly hike with Mia through the forest. But their trip comes to a sudden end, as Annie stumbles upon a torn tent with two bloody bodies inside.
Annie soon finds herself a suspect in a murder investigation, as does others in the local community.
Meanwhile Birger, the town doctor, is fishing with the chief of police when the news of the murders arrives. Soon, Birger finds himself engulfed in the investigation, and its alluring, dark side.
Johan is the black sheep in a forestry family. His half-brothers make his life hell, and Johan runs away from home. After a long night in the mountains, he is picked up by a mysterious woman with a hidden agenda.
The police investigation is met by a wall of silence from the buttoned-up locals. Several people come under suspicion, one after the other, but the murders remain unsolved. The case is finally closed, and a blanket of silence descends upon the small rural area.
Eighteen years later, in 1991, Mia returns to Blackwater, now as an adult, to visit Annie, who settled in the town as a teacher after the collapse of her communal dream. Mia brings her new boyfriend, Johan, who hasn’t set foot in town since the night he left, many years ago.
Annie suddenly disappears, stirring up the traumas of the past again and sowing discord between the characters. Birger, who is in a relationship with Annie, is convinced that her disappearance is connected to the murders. But the police do not care for his theories, so he investigates them himself, together with Johan, who has reasons of his own for wanting to solve the case.
The truth, when they finally uncover it, is shocking. But it will also free them from the traumas of the past…
