Willie Nelson’s newest studio album ‘Last Leaf on the Tree' is out now via Legacy Recordings, marking the 76th solo album and 153rd overall release in his illustrious career. Produced by Willie’s son Micah Nelson, the album features a distinctive collection of covers spanning rock legends, eclectic singer-songwriters, alt-rock classics, and indie folk, in addition to a fresh take on Willie’s own 1967 song ‘The Ghost' and a new father-son composition.
With ‘Last Leaf on the Tree' Nelson continues to reflect on themes of legacy and artistry, bringing family and musical influences together in a heartfelt project.
Nelson began calling his backing band “The Family” in the 1970s, a nod to his sister Bobbie who played piano beside him. Today, the “Family” extends to include Willie’s own children, with both Lukas and Micah sharing the spotlight on numerous projects. Since their childhoods, both Lukas and Micah have walked artistic paths alongside their father, lending their voices and musical talents to his work, with Lukas carrying the torch as a singer-songwriter and Micah pushing creative boundaries across genres.
The idea for ‘Last Leaf on the Tree' took shape when Willie’s longtime manager, Mark Rothbaum, suggested that Micah produce an album for his father. Though Micah has collaborated on family-focused albums before, this project marked a significant step. Known for his work with bands like Insects Vs. Robots and his solo project, Particle Kid, Micah’s influences lean toward indie and experimental, shaped by artists such as the Flaming Lips and Beck. His diverse musical background raised questions about how he’d bridge his unique style with his father’s timeless sound—but the results showcase both the Nelsons’ creative synergy and the enduring strength of Willie’s musical legacy.
In his role as producer, Micah contributed in various ways: he played several instruments, designed the album cover, and even collaborated with his wife, Alexandra Dascalu Nelson, on animations for the video of the album’s first single, a cover of Tom Waits’ ‘Last Leaf.' True to form, Willie’s guitar “Trigger” is a central voice on the album, with special guest appearances from renowned artists including producer and musician Daniel Lanois, John Densmore of The Doors, Senegalese musician Magatte Sow, and harmonica legend Mickey Raphael, who’s been playing with Willie for over half a century.
‘Last Leaf on the Tree' pays homage to Willie’s legacy while looking forward, blending his familiar voice with fresh interpretations of musical classics and surprising new elements. With contributions from a global mix of musicians, the album is a celebration of both family and the transformative power of music across generations.
‘Last Leaf on the Tree' is now available for streaming, download, CD, and on a limited-edition amber swirl double LP vinyl. Listen and order here for a piece of Willie Nelson’s newest musical chapter, brought to life with family by his side.
