Walter Presents will bring the first season of ‘Pale Mountains', a series from Italy and Germany, to Channel 4 and C4 Streaming in June.
The series stars Elena Radonicich, Matteo Martari and Richard Sammel. It is directed by Davide Marengo and Giuseppe Bonito.
Bolzano, Southern Tyrol. A city straddling two cultures, two languages—and two identities. Though part of Italy, many speak German here, and the city’s divisions run deeper than dialect. On one side, the German-speaking citizens – precise, disciplined, and prosperous. On the other, the passionate Italians – loud, vibrant, and fiery. But both are shaken to their core when a ruthless serial killer resurfaces, targeting German-speaking victims.
Eva Kofler, a young and ambitious German-speaking assistant DA, is thrust into a chilling case when a murder points to the return of the infamous Monster of Bolzano, a serial killer who has been dormant for over three years. The victim, Hans Meier, was German-speaking, and the killer’s grisly methods suggest it’s the same person who evaded justice in the original investigation handled by Eva’s father, Gerhard Kofler. Once a respected DA, Gerhard now battles early-onset Alzheimer's, and his past is haunting Eva's every step.
Compounding the pressure, Eva’s DA colleagues doubt her abilities, forcing them to enlist Paolo Costa, a tormented Italian detective with a personal vendetta. Paolo lost his leg and his girlfriend trying to catch the killer, and the case has consumed him ever since. The Monster isn’t just a case to Paolo; it’s a personal obsession.
As Eva and Paolo begin working together, their contrasting personalities – Paolo’s intuition and Eva’s methodical approach – help them make progress in the investigation. However, the pursuit of the Monster takes a personal toll on Paolo, straining his relationship with his partner, Michela. Meanwhile, Eva becomes emotionally involved in another case involving the theft of a Schiele painting, which leads her to question the motives behind her defense of a young artist, Mathilde.
Walter Presents: ‘Pale Mountains' launches 16th June 2025 on Channel 4 at midnight. It will be available as a full boxset on C4 Streaming from 13th June 2025.
