More than four decades into their career, Tesla are proving there’s still room for something new, and something meaningful, with the release of their latest single, ‘Never Alone.'
Arriving ahead of their upcoming album ‘Homage' (out July 17 via Frontiers Music Srl), the track stands out as the lone original song on a project otherwise dedicated to reinterpreting the band’s influences. In that sense, ‘Never Alone' feels less like an outlier and more like a mission statement: a bridge between where Tesla came from and where they are now.
The origins of the song are as unassuming as they are fitting. Bassist Brian Wheat stumbled upon the initial idea almost by accident while spending time at the home of Rachael Ray and John Cusimano. With time to spare, he picked up an acoustic guitar and began strumming a simple progression, something that, upon listening back, felt unmistakably like Tesla.
What followed was a collaborative process with frontman Jeff Keith that shaped the song into its final form. Keith supplied the title and helped refine the lyrics and structure, with the pair adjusting melodies and reworking the chorus until the track fully clicked into place. The result is a song that leans into the band’s core identity, melodic, reflective and grounded in a sense of connection, while still feeling fresh.
There’s something fitting about ‘Never Alone' emerging at the 11th hour of recording ‘Homage.' The album itself is a tribute project, built around songs that shaped Tesla’s musical DNA, echoing the band’s own beginnings as a covers act playing California clubs before evolving into multi-platinum artists. In that context, the new track feels like a reminder that the story didn’t stop with those influences: it continues through them.
‘Homage' follows in the lineage of Tesla’s earlier ‘Real to Reel' releases, but with a broader sense of purpose. Rather than simply revisiting classic songs, the album positions itself as a thank-you, an acknowledgement of the artists who helped define the band’s sound, from the spirit of The Beatles to the swagger of The Rolling Stones. It’s also a platform for Keith’s vocal range, allowing him to move between styles while still anchoring everything in Tesla’s signature tone.
Against that backdrop, ‘Never Alone' carries added weight. It’s not just a new song: it’s a statement of continuity. A reminder that even as Tesla look back, they’re still creating, still evolving, and still finding new ways to express the identity they’ve spent decades building.
And perhaps most fittingly of all, it arrives with a message that feels both personal and universal, that no matter how far the journey goes, you’re never really on it alone.
