Review: Rascal Flatts re-invent & re-imagine on new album ‘Life is a Highway – Refueled’

Rascal Flatts’ ‘Life is a Highway – Refueled' is a bold, celebratory reimagining of the band’s storied back catalogue, following in the footsteps of Brooks & Dunn’s successful ‘Reboot' project. Rather than simply re-recording old hits with updated production, Rascal Flatts have chosen to collaborate with a dynamic roster of country contemporaries and pop-rock icons, each of whom brings their own flair to these cherished tracks. The result is a fascinating blend of nostalgia and innovation, a project that breathes fresh life into well-worn fan favourites while showcasing the timelessness of the band’s songwriting.

The album opens with a new track, ‘I Dare You,' featuring the Jonas Brothers, and it sets a high bar. Co-written by Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay, this bright, effervescent anthem is pure summer joy—a breezy tribute to young love and daring optimism. With the Jonas Brothers elevating the harmony game and a slick pop-country production, it’s the perfect blend of Flatts’ melodic sensibility and modern flair. If this is a taste of what a full new Rascal Flatts album might sound like, fans should be clamouring for more.

Among the reworked classics, Jason Aldean lends a gritty punch to ‘Fast Cars and Freedom,' turning the previously fiddle-laced original into a guitar-heavy anthem. Aldean’s muscular style adds a new urgency to the song’s themes of youth and escape, while Gary LeVox’s vocals maintain the emotional centre. Similarly, Carly Pearce brings a tender vulnerability to ‘My Wish,' her voice entwining beautifully with LeVox’s over a newly prominent fiddle arrangement. The update feels natural and heartfelt, adding layers of poignancy to this already touching ballad.

Other collaborations offer dramatic stylistic shifts. ‘Stand' with Christian artist Brandon Lake transforms into an 80s rock-inspired powerhouse, with thunderous drums and soaring guitars complementing Lake’s raw, textured vocals. It’s arguably the album’s biggest sonic departure—and improvement—offering a beefier, stadium-sized sound that re-contextualises the track entirely. Meanwhile, ‘What Hurts the Most,' featuring the Backstreet Boys, slides into full-on boy band territory, exchanging the original’s country heartbreak for lush pop theatrics. Though not as emotionally resonant as the original, it’s an intriguing crossover experiment that finds its own momentum in the back half.

Elsewhere, tracks like ‘Mayberry' and ‘Summer Nights' stay closer to their original spirit. Blake Shelton’s rich baritone feels at home in ‘Mayberry,' lending a grounded authenticity to the song’s small-town nostalgia. Ashley Cooke adds sparkle to ‘Summer Nights,' and while this version doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it benefits from cleaner production and a well-balanced mix of acoustic guitars and high-energy fiddles. Jordan Davis takes the reins on ‘Yours If You Want It,' infusing it with his signature rhythmic charm and turning it into something that could easily pass as one of his own radio hits.

The album closes with two showstoppers: ‘Life is a Highway,' featuring Lzzy Hale and ‘I’m Movin' On' with Kelly Clarkson. Hale’s fierce, rock-driven take on ‘… Highway' pushes it into full arena-rock territory—an explosive reinterpretation that may divide purists but will thrill fans of crossover power. Clarkson, meanwhile, delivers a masterclass in vocal emotion on ‘I’m Movin' On.' Her voice soars and stretches the song to its emotional limits, elevating it beyond its original form. It’s a grand finale that reaffirms the versatility and depth of Rascal Flatts’ music.

‘Life is a Highway – Refueled' isn’t just a tribute to Rascal Flatts’ past; it’s a thoughtful reintroduction. The collaborative spirit and updated production reveal the adaptability and strength of the band’s songwriting while introducing their music to a new generation. Most of the pairings work beautifully and even where the results are more divisive, they remain interesting and sincere. This isn’t just a greatest hits package—it’s a reinvention. Rascal Flatts may be revisiting the past, but in doing so, they’ve taken a bold step toward the future.
