As we head towards Easter, NQV Media’s short film collection ‘The Male Gaze’ returns for another outing. ‘The Male Gaze: Reality Bites’ brings together six short films that explore men and boys on the verge of crossing the line and giving in to temptation. The collection takes in films from Mexico, Brazil, Germany, and Israel, with one of the films a joint effort from France and Russia. The end result is an eclectic selection of shorts that explore the release’s theme in very different ways.
‘The Male Gaze: Reality Bites’ takes us to Mexico for ‘Sipping’ from Bárbara Moreno Turcott. We meet Santiago (Daniel Emilio Martínez) and Jared (César Kancino), two very different teenagers who are brought together to work through their differences. As they talk, the boys decide to play a game with a bottle of honey that takes their friendship into new territory and sees them both realising something about themselves that they perhaps didn’t know before. The film captures the tendency of teenagers to experiment and push boundaries as they figure out who they really are.
Brazilian film-maker Ralph Somma delivers something very different with ‘His Voice’. Juliano (Ian Braga) leads a modern Christian youth group and secretly hides his true sexuality from those around him. Desperate to keep that part of himself hidden, Juliano is forced to confront who he is when he meets a flamboyant group of friends and he lets his guard down. Stories about closeted gay men are a dime a dozen but this one from Somma feels authentic and it’s a really engaging watch.
Tavo Ruiz takes us to Germany for ‘Eden’, brother and sister Lukas (Jan Osojca) and Hannah (Sophie de Frenne) head to a lake outside of Berlin to spend the day together with their friend Fynn (Jon Rosenkranz). What they don’t know is that they both have feelings for Fynn and they end up unwittingly competing for his attention. Ruiz explores the uncertainty that many young gay men feel when it comes to expressing their interest in other men, unaware of whether their advances will be welcomed or rebuffed.
Felipe Saraiva turns the viewer’s attention to fetishes with his sexually-charged film ‘At My Feet’. A young man (André Ximenes) meets an older man (Murilo Ramos) in a bar, and they navigate an instant chemistry that is explored through an unusual encounter. The two don’t engage in a standard hook-up, with the older man far more interested in satisfying himself by being intimate with the younger man’s feet. It’s one of the more out there moments on the collection, for sure!

The penultimate film takes us to Israel for Lior Soroka’s ‘Boys’ where 17-year-old Nadav (Eitan Gimelman) decides to serve in an army unit against his mother’s wishes. What he doesn’t realise is that his decision will open his eyes up to things about himself he’s never confronted. An encounter with the handsome coach of the unit throws an unexpected set of feelings Nadav’s way and he embarks on a coming-of-age journey that he didn’t necessarily see coming.
‘White Crows’ from Denis Liakhov is the final film on the release. Closeted Russian Vlad (Vladislav Botnaru) is thrown into a panic when his brother arranges for him to spend the night with a female prostitute at a sauna. Surrounded by alpha-males, all waiting for their turn with the woman, Vlad has to keep his true sexuality secret while navigating the homophobic attitudes of his brother and his friends. Scared that he’s going to be found out, Vlad finds an unexpected ally and he might just make it through the night without anyone knowing the truth. This short looks at the way that Russian’s treat gay men, and shines a spotlight on the reality of men like Vlad.
‘The Male Gaze: Reality Bites’ is another stellar collection and it’s a very strong set of films. As always with this series, the shorts cover a tremendous amount of ground and the theme across the six films is compelling. There’s plenty of food for thought here as you watch boys and men at different stages of life dealing with the hurdles thrown their way. If you’ve been following this series closely, make sure you don’t miss this latest instalment!
