After nearly two decades at the helm of American Country Countdown, Kix Brooks has announced his decision to step away from his role as host of the beloved radio show. Brooks, who began his tenure in January 2006, has become a trusted voice in country music, celebrated for his ability to connect with listeners while sharing the week’s top hits, candid artist interviews, and rich storytelling.
Known for honoring the genre's deep roots while spotlighting rising stars, Brooks brought a rare perspective to the program. His deep understanding of country music history, coupled with his warmth and humor, has made American Country Countdown a weekly must-listen for fans across the nation.
Kix Reflects on His Journey
Reflecting on his 18-year journey, Brooks expressed his gratitude for the role:
“I never dreamed I would be asked to host a legendary international radio show like American Country Countdown. The fact that I have been supported by hundreds of affiliates and an amazing team of radio professionals for 18 years has made this one of the greatest experiences of my professional life. It’s time to turn my primary focus back to writing, recording, and touring with Brooks & Dunn. It’s been an honor, to say the least, that I was trusted with a microphone that had such an iconic history. Special thanks to all the fans who listened and participated, to ensure that I was being the best that I could be. Keep counting ‘em down!”
His final broadcast is set to air the weekend of December 28-29, 2024, closing a chapter on an era of excellence in country radio.
A Legacy of Accomplishment
Under Brooks’ stewardship, American Country Countdown became one of the most beloved radio programs in the country, broadcast to more than 300 stations nationwide via Westwood One. The show’s success was bolstered by the efforts of Executive Producer Lonnie Napier, Network Producer Nikita Palmer, and writer/contributor Suzanne Alexander.
Brooks’ contributions to broadcasting earned him the CMA National Broadcast Personality of the Year award three times (2009, 2011, 2013), making him the first individual to win CMA awards in both artist and broadcast categories. In 2021, he was honored with the ACM National Personality award, cementing his place as one of the most influential voices in country radio.
Brooks & Dunn: An Iconic Partnership
While Brooks is stepping away from radio, his career as part of the record-breaking duo Brooks & Dunn continues to flourish. The pair, who were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019, have amassed:
- 20 chart-topping hits
- 40 Top 10 songs
- Over 80 industry awards, including two GRAMMYs
Their recently released album, REBOOT II, showcases a bold collaboration with contemporary artists reimagining Brooks & Dunn’s classic hits. In 2025, they’ll return to the road for their highly anticipated NEON MOON TOUR, continuing their tradition of sold-out performances across North America.
Beyond Music
In addition to his musical and broadcasting achievements, Brooks is also a respected entrepreneur and philanthropist. As co-owner of the award-winning Arrington Vineyards, a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and the first recipient of the CMA Humanitarian Award, his influence extends far beyond the stage.
Looking Ahead
As Kix Brooks steps away from American Country Countdown, fans can look forward to his renewed focus on creating music with Brooks & Dunn, as well as his continued impact on country music and the broader entertainment industry.
