Set to debut on Friday, June 28, ‘Growin’ Up Country Vol. Two' is a charming collection of children’s songs brought to life by some of country music’s most talented artists and songwriters. Following the success of last year's inaugural volume, which was praised as a “heartwarming collection of music that’s perfect for the next generation of music lovers” by iHeartCountry, this new album promises to deliver the same catchy, family-friendly tunes that has families singing along together.
This sophomore instalment features an impressive lineup, including John Osborne of Brothers Osborne, Runaway June, Andrew Jannakos, Kelleigh Bannen and many more. Each artist brings their unique style and warmth to the project, creating a vibrant tapestry of sound that will delight both children and their parents.
“I’m so excited to share that Growin’ Up Country is back with more music for the whole family,” says artist and executive producer Jaden Michaels. “This project is so close to my heart. Many of the artists and writers on this project are parents, including myself. I’m passionate about creating music that will empower children with songs that parents will actually enjoy listening to as well.”
The album opens with Twinnie's ‘Hey Y’all Hey,' a light, breezy introduction that sets the tone for a positive day. With its infectious melody and sunny chorus, it encourages children to greet the day with optimism. Lines like “How’s your day, mine’s blue skies, no work, all play” encapsulate the song's uplifting spirit, making it a perfect start to the album.
Runaway June follows with ‘Put A Smile On,' another track brimming with positivity. This country/bluegrass-infused rock song features funky vibes and encouraging lyrics such as “let’s turn a few frowns upside down.” The engaging call and response section in the final third invites kids to sing along, enhancing the song's interactive appeal. It's an energetic reminder to start the day right and keep it going strong.
One of the standout tracks on the album is ‘Working on a Beautiful Song' by John Osborne & Lucie Silvas. This husband and wife duo deliver a catchy call and response tune that builds to a robust chorus about clapping hands, snapping fingers, and whistling. The song almost breaks the fourth wall, with John and Lucie showing kids how to join in and create music. It's easy to imagine this track becoming a favourite at baby and toddler groups worldwide, thanks to its infectious energy and participatory nature.
Jaden Michaels' ‘Dream Up' is another highlight, offering a drum-driven anthem about self-esteem and empowerment. With its bluegrass undertones, the song encourages kids to look in the mirror and see their biggest fan. Lyrics like “I’ll be braver than brave and strong enough” inspire confidence and bravery, making it a powerful addition to the album. The upbeat tempo and catchy melody ensure it will resonate with both children and their parents.
On ‘Big Feelings' Canadian band High Valley bring their trademark sound to a song that encourages children to be OK with not always feeling great whilst Lenny Pey's ‘Let's Go Let's Go' is a funky, percussion driven song that encourages kids to get up and dance, move about and stamp their feet. This track is less of a message song and more about dancing around and having a great time. There's bags of encouragement to join in and lots of instructions on what to do also on this energetic and fun song.
Kelleigh Bannen's ‘Alive' is a smooth, slick modern Country song with anthemic overtones that builds to an arena-sized chorus about feeling good to be alive. Empowering lyrics and probably the best vocal performance on the album from Bannen make this track a real standout and possibly the song on the album that parents will enjoy the most in their own right as they listen along with their kids. Think Carrie Underwood vibes and you won't be far away for a touchstone.
The album closes with Sarahbeth Taite's ‘Like a Butterfly,' a dreamy, hazy track that tells the story of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. This metaphor for growth and change is beautifully rendered, with Taite’s vocals echoing early Kacey Musgraves. Lyrics such as “Look at my colours showing, I’m shining bright, I’m glowing, I’m not afraid of growing” provide a fitting conclusion to the album, reminding listeners of the natural progression of life and the beauty of change.
‘Growing Up Country Volume II' is a well-crafted, engaging collection that will charm young listeners and their families, continuing the legacy of its predecessor with grace and joy. The album has been designed to bridge the gap between kids' music and the adult country genre, offering empowering lyrics and engaging melodies that resonate with all ages. From playful anthems to energetic dance parties to soothing lullabies, the album is poised to become a family favourite, continuing the tradition of fostering a love for country music in the youngest listeners and providing an opportunity for families to share special moments together.
