Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving) thinks that she’s survived her nightmare evening following the failed attempt of the Le Domas family to kill her. Taken to hospital after the ordeal, Grace is reunited with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton). Having not seen each other for years, the friction surfaces immediately but they are forced to put that to one side when they are kidnapped and find themselves being forced to play another game but this time there are five elite families out to kill them.
‘Ready Or Not’ was released in 2019 and it proved to be a surprise hit at the box office, largely due to strong word of mouth. Seven years after that film directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett aka Radio Silence, are back with a direct sequel. Picking up exactly where the first film left off, with Grace smoking a cigarette as the Le Domas’ mansion burns down, our heroine soon passes out from the ordeal and is taken to hospital. Under suspicion of murder and arson, and unexpectedly reunited with her sister, Grace can’t believe her misfortune.

Things quickly turn from bad to worse when the Council sets another game in motion, with five families competing to win a seat. Siblings Ursula (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Titus (Shawn Hatosy) murder their father, at his request, so they can compete and they host the new game their family resort. Grace and Faith are kidnapped and awaken to find themselves forced into a deadly game where they must try and survive the night. Of course, Grace has been through it only 24 hours earlier, and she’s battle weary from the first round.
What ensues is a darkly funny adventure that has similarities to the original movie but does manage to forge its own path. This is largely helped by the inclusion of the excellent Kathryn Newton as Faith, who quickly builds a believable bickering sibling chemistry with Samara Weaving’s Grace. At the start of their fight for survival, the sisters are handcuffed together and that forces them to confront issues from their past that drove them apart. While they work through those, the larger-than-life cast of would-be assassins are after them, so the sisters have to use their wits to survive.

Samara Weaving gives another superb performance as Grace, the heroine that you root for and who seems to always be able to rally herself for another round no matter how tired she is. A supporting cast that includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy and Nestor Carbonell rounds out a fantastic ensemble, with each player giving memorable performances. It’s particularly nice to see Gellar playing a less likeable character.
Extras on the Blu-ray release of the film are plentiful. There’s a 4-part making-of featurette, taking you behind the scenes of the movie, a ‘Rules of the Game’ featurette that explains the central premise, a gag reel and two separate audio commentaries – one featuring the directors and Weaving and Newton, and the other the directors, writers and producers.

‘Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come’ is a hell of a lot of fun and it’s a worthy successor to the original film. While it might not be hugely different from the first film, it’s still entertaining thanks to the addition of the sister dynamic, and the widening of the playing field for the central game. Thanks to its fantastic cast, ‘Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come’ is always entertaining and the fast pace will keep you hooked. Get ready to laugh, jump and avert your eyes!
