Thompson Square return today with ‘Lay It On Me,' a swampy, high-energy new single that captures the duo’s evolving sound — and spotlights a standout collaboration with acclaimed songwriter and artist Ryan Hurd.
Co-written by Keifer and Shawna Thompson alongside Johnathan Singleton and Hurd, ‘Lay It On Me' blends a gritty groove with an undeniable sense of summer ease. The track marks the second release from the duo’s forthcoming album and signals a continued shift toward music built for the stage — dynamic, immediate, and deeply felt.
From the first note, ‘Lay It On Me' pulls listeners into a hazy summer night — gravel crunching under tires, moonlight cutting through the trees, and two people letting their walls fall away. The song’s laid-back swagger and lived-in details create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive, equally suited for a backroad drive or a packed live show.
“This was our first time writing with Johnathan and Ryan, and we were fired up going into it,” said Thompson Square. “They’re both incredible writers, and we knew something special could happen. We walked away with ‘Lay It On Me,’ and it just feels like us — that energy, that swampy groove. It really captures where we are creatively right now. We’ve been leaning into songs that hit hard live and feel authentic to what we love.”
The collaboration carries particular weight thanks to Hurd’s involvement, whose songwriting sensibility adds a fresh edge to the track’s texture and storytelling.
Singleton added, “I’ve always been a fan of Thompson Square. Ryan and I were pumped to get in a room with them. We wrote a killer song, and sometimes those songs just wait for the right moment. I’m glad this one’s getting its time.”
Hurd reflected on the experience as a formative one: “This was actually my first time ever on a tour bus. Getting to write with Thompson Square and Jonathan early on was such a great memory — and now to see the song come out is really special.”
Produced by Mickey Jack Cones, ‘Lay It On Me' was recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. The track features Miles McPherson (drums), Craig Young (bass), and Ilya Toshinskiy, with Cones and Derek Jones contributing across guitars, keys, programming, and background vocals alongside Rob McNelly, Derek Wells, and David Dorn. Mixed by Cones at The Conederoza and mastered by Andrew Mendelson at Georgetown Masters, the production delivers a cohesive, performance-driven punch.
‘Lay It On Me' continues to build anticipation for what promises to be an electrifying new chapter for Thompson Square — one rooted in energy, connection, and songs that come alive onstage.
