Ty Myers may be only 18-years-old but his talent is ageless. In 2025 at the age of 17, Myers released his debut album ‘The Select’, which featured his breakthrough single ‘Ends of the Earth’. Since then, Myers has garnered plenty of critical acclaim following going viral on TikTok, and he’s amassed an impressive number of streams for his music. Recently, Myers was in the UK to perform at C2C in London and now he’s releasing his eagerly awaited second album ‘Heave on the Soul’.
Arriving a little over a year after ‘The Select’, ‘Heavy on the Soul’ aims to continue the momentum that Myers has been building over the last 18 months. The set sees Myers continuing to take creative control with a solo writing credit or co-writing credit on all but one of the 17 tracks. Working with producer Brandon Hood, Myers continues to explore his fusion of soul, blues, pop and Country enabling himself to transcend genre and find a sound that’s uniquely his.
Album opener ‘Morning Comes’, like much of Myers’ work to date, draws influence from John Mayer. The shimmering guitars create space for Myers’ soulful voice to cut through and drive the melody. Imagine John Mayer around his ‘Continuum’ era and you’ll be in the right ballpark for what to expect. Determined to show that he has range, Myers cranks up the tempo and the volume on the bluesy ‘Don’t You Know, a song that takes you to a dive bar in Alabama sonically. On this track, Myers’ voice unleashes a grittier edge that belies his 18 years and supports the narrative that he may just be the next big star in music.
‘Message To You’ finds Myers unleashing his inner crooner, with heartfelt sentiment driving one of the album’s more emotive moments. Girls will swoon and it’s fair to say that Myers sounds fantastic. The punchier ‘Run Run Run’ is a beat-driven blues track that is one of the early highlights on the record, while the previously released “Leavin’ Carolina” is a slow-building soul track that showcases Myers’ softer side, and his guitar-playing skills. ‘Come On Over Baby’ (sadly not a Christina Aguilera cover) is the purest blues moment on the record, bringing to mind the late great Robert Johnson and the cinematic ‘Through a Screen’ switches things up for a piano-led moment.
The album’s only cover ‘Two Trains’, written and originally recorded by Little Feat, features Blues star Marcus King. The collaboration is a match made in heaven, making the most of both Myers’ and King’s talent. The funky ‘Gone Too Long’ is one of the stronger moments from the last stretch of the record, and paired with the similar sounding ‘Bad Guy’ it’s a double hit of uptempo swagger. Myers ends the record with ‘Good Morning Paris’, which features a guitar riff that brings to mind Goo Goo Dolls’ mighty ‘Iris’.
Perhaps the criticism that can be levelled at ‘Heavy on the Soul’ is that the album is long. That’s a brave move given the average attention span of the Gen-Z audience is low. Myers delivers almost an hour of music with this record and it could have been trimmed down a little in places. There’s nothing bad on here per se, but there are a couple of moments that don’t differentiate themselves substantially from one another.
‘Heavy on the Soul’ straddles so many genres that it may be difficult for Myers to market himself to any one audience. With Gen-Z consuming most of their music via social media, especially TikTok, it probably doesn’t matter as the music industry is now being driven by whatever picks up the most streams. ‘Heave on the Soul’ is an impressively polished album for an artist still at the beginning of his career, and if Myers keeps up this level of quality, he could very well emerge as one of the leading stars in blues and soul.
