Review: Larry Fleet is reflective, emotional and laid bare on ‘Another Year Older’

Larry Fleet released his debut album “Workin’ Hard” in 2019, his first via record label Big Loud. Gaining fans across the globe, and building a reputation as a solid live performer, Fleet went on to release second album ‘Stack of Records’ in 2021 and third album ‘Earned It’ in 2023. Following the release of ‘Earned It’, Fleet parted ways with Big Loud and his first project as an independent artist was the four-track ‘Somewhere in the South’ EP, which arrived in 2025. 7 months on from that release, Fleet is teaming up with Stellar Way Records / EMPIRE to release his fourth studio album ‘Another Year Older’ today.

Quite as to why Fleet isn’t one of the biggest stars in modern Country music is baffling. His voice is reminiscent of Chris Stapleton, albeit with a softer edge, and his music has been consistently strong. ‘Another Year Older’ continues to tell the singer-songwriter’s story, focusing on storytelling and honouring Country tradition across its 11 tracks. Lead single ‘American Made’, which is the album’s closing track, is a perfect introduction to the record with Fleet’s voice shining as he sings about appreciating and acknowledging the small things in life that are important. At a time when America is more divided than it’s ever been, it’s a strong message.

That approach to celebrating life and appreciating all it brings, is prevalent across the entire album. Opening track ‘More of That’ addresses how the world could do with listening to all sides, rather than taking polar stances on seemingly every issue. The message of the track may be a little naïve but surely unity is all we want? As Bad Bunny’s performance at the Super Bowl Halftime show just proved, there’s a lot of anger from all sides so hoping for a quieter and time, with more understanding is surely a good thing?

One of the album’s first standout moments is the contemplative ‘Baseball on the Radio’. The nostalgia-filled track looks back on all the simple moments that we didn’t appreciate we’d never get back, or be able to experience again. If it catches you in the right moment, you might even shed a tear while listening to this one. Once you’ve wiped your tears from ‘Baseball on the Radio’, ‘Hotel Bible’ might be enough to ruin you. Fleet sings of drowning his sorrows with alcohol and wrestling with the choices he’s made in his life. It’s heartbreaking, it’s refreshingly honest and it’s a tour-de-force.

It's not all tear-inducing on ‘Another Year Older’ though. The uptempo ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ combines a soulful groove with Fleet’s distinctive vocals for a loved-up sexy moment, while ‘Whole Lotta Little Things’ leans heavily into soul for a blissed-out reflection on a relationship growing from feelings to marriage and kids. ‘Drunk Advice’ is an amusing tale of thinking you have the answers to everything after a few drinks, when in reality we’re all just muddling through the best that we can.

Elsewhere on the album ‘5:25’ is an emotive time capsule of a child’s adoration of his father, ‘Both Sides of the Fence’ calls for tolerance of people with opinions different to your own, and ‘Another Year Older’ is an ode to a family member that has passed away. ‘If I Still Was’, another standout moment on the record, as Fleet sings about making his way through a difficult time and finding himself grateful that he survived it.

‘Another Year Older’ is an album that captures a man who has lived a life and isn’t afraid to share his experiences. It’s actually a welcome change to hear someone calling for unity in Country music, rather than taking sides and calling out anyone that doesn’t agree. Fleet has always been a class act and ‘Another Year Older’ is his finest album yet. With a voice I could listen to all day and songs that touch the heart, this is an example of real Country music thriving and an artist confident enough to let his storytelling do the heavy lifting.
