The Friday Finest Five: drinking, cigarettes and life reflections among this week’s best new releases

February is upon us, which means that's C2C is just over a month away so it's no surprise that Country stars are releasing music thick and fast. This week, we've been sifting through all of the new songs that have landed in our inbox and we've chosen our five favourites. Keep reading to find out what we've chosen and take time out to give them all a listen…

Koe Wetzel – ‘Time Goes On'

One artist going from strength-to-strength with each release is Koe Wetzel, so it's no surprise that his latest banger has landed on our Friday Finest Five this week. ‘Time Goes On' was co-written by Wetzel with frequent collaborators Amy Allen, Carrie Karpinen, Josh Serrato and producer Gabe Simon. Reflecting on the challenges that life throws your way, ‘Time Goes On' is a big song punctuated by rocky guitars and Wetzel's unmistakeable vocal. The only way is up for Wetzel!

Zach John King – “Get to Drinkin'”

We've had our eye on Zach John King for a while now and we're always keen to hear anything he has to offer. New song “Get to Drinkin'” was written by the star with Rhett Akins, Kyle Sturrock, Thomas Archer, and Kyle Fishman, and it's a mid-tempo radio-friendly song that reminds us of early Thomas Rhett. There's soul in there, Country and a little rock too. Too early to say this could be one of the songs of the summer?

Elizabeth Nichols – ‘Sweet Cigarette'

She'll be in the UK in March for C2C and Elizabeth Nichols is making sure we've got plenty of music to look forward to. New release ‘Sweet Cigarette' is Kacey Musgraves by way of Miranda Lambert at her stripped-down best. An ode to figuring out life in your 20s, and going a little wild, ‘Sweet Cigarette' is a beautifully understated song that is sure to become a live favourite over C2C. If you don't know her name yet, you will do very soon!

Cooper Alan – ‘Work'

With Walker Hayes M.I.A., it seems that rising star Cooper Alan is making a land grab. New track ‘Work' is an upbeat, tongue-in-cheek anthem that turns everyday work frustrations into a relatable and catchy singalong. Featuring punchy lyrics and a playful delivery, the song sits neatly alongside Hayes' smash hit ‘Fancy Like'. The language may be a little more on the explicit side, but don't be surprised if we see a TikTok storm of dances to go with the song in the coming weeks.

George Birge (feat. Luke Bryan) – ‘Ride, Ride, Ride'

Written by Birge with Tyler Hubbard, Casey Brown and Parker Welling, and produced by Casey Brown, ‘Ride, Ride, Ride' is the latest smash-in-waiting from one of our favourite rising stars. Featuring Luke Bryan, which surely gives the song a huge stamp of approval, ‘Ride, Ride, Ride' features one hell of a gut punch if you listen closely to the lyrics. Resilience and truth lie at the heart of the song, and we think this one is going to be around for a while!
