Hollywood star Mischa Barton (‘The O.C.', ‘The Sixth Sense') will make her UK stage debut next year in a brand-new stage adaptation of ‘Double Indemnity', one of the greatest crime stories ever written. The gripping new noir thriller opens at the Churchill Theatre Bromley from 21st–25th April 2026, with a major UK and Ireland tour to follow.
Based on James M. Cain’s seminal 1936 novel, which inspired Billy Wilder’s Oscar-nominated 1944 film noir classic, ‘Double Indemnity' is a razor-sharp story of lust, greed, and betrayal.
Set in Depression-era Los Angeles, the play follows Walter Huff, a smart-talking insurance salesman whose routine meeting with the alluring Phyllis Nirdlinger (played by Barton) leads to a dangerous affair and a deadly plan. Together, they scheme to murder her husband and cash in the insurance policy – but as passion and paranoia take hold, their perfect crime begins to unravel.
Speaking about her long-awaited UK theatre debut, Mischa Barton said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to the stage and making my UK theatre debut in Double Indemnity. This classic film noir favourite is a gripping tale of deceit, tension and suspense, and I cannot wait to step into the role of Phyllis and share her with audiences across the UK and Ireland for the first time.”
Adapted for the stage by Tom Holloway and directed by Oscar Toeman (‘Farewell Mr Haffmann', ‘The Sugar Syndrome'), the production promises a dark, atmospheric reimagining of Cain’s legendary story – one that defined the noir genre and continues to fascinate audiences more than eight decades later.
Further casting will be announced soon. Tickets are already on sale. Book now for ‘Double Indemnity'.
