Alaina Stacey has released her new EP ‘Dusk', the final instalment of her three-EP series.
The release follows 2023's ‘Dawn' and 2024's ‘Day'. The latest collection is filled with the sun-down mood not fit for the previous two releases. Watch the lyric video for ‘Think Of You' below:
“These are songs that I’ve written over the last decade,” she explains. “They don’t all make sense on the same album. Instead, I like to imagine them reflecting different sonic and emotional moments in my life.”
Dusk is that time of day that produces regret, uncertainty, and hope. Regret about what could have been, uncertainty about the choices ahead, and hope for what tomorrow will bring. Stacey set out to musically interpret the aesthetics of that precarious hour on her brand new EP.
Uncertainty finds its way into the musical choices throughout ‘Dusk', and the exploration of new musical genres. While ‘Think of You' and ‘Stan' – a song written from the point of view of her Alzheimer stricken grandfather, who experienced “sundowning” at dusk – are grounded in Stacey’s Americana and Country Music roots, other songs point in different directions.
‘Revolve', produced by Chicago’s Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, Counting Crows), and ‘Drunken Lullaby', suggest a more indie sound. In ‘Late Night Lies', Stacey unabashedly falls into the throwback whimsical pop crooning style of a Burt Bacharach song. ‘Insomnia' illustrates the downside of too much nighttime navel gazing.
However, the uncertainty of a new day also brings the hope of springing out of that paralysis of choice into action. Fully awake, and hopeful for tomorrow, Stacey’s grand concept of this release has ticked over into a new day and into the world for fans to experience intertwined with their own lives.
The track list for ‘Dusk' is:
- Think of You
- Insomnia
