Bones Coffee Company is a family-run business based in Florida and they’ve been making a name for themselves thanks to their innovative approach to coffee. Offering both whole bean and ground coffee bags, Bones Coffee Company is all about having fun with your coffee and they have a huge range of flavours available to try. From ‘Mint Invaders From Chocolate Space’ through to ‘Cherry Ice Cream’, they really do have something for everyone. Alongside their standard range, the company does plenty of limited edition and seasonal flavours too, meaning there’s likely always something new and exciting to try.
When Bones Coffee Company reached out to us, I was delighted to be asked if I’d like to try some of their coffee. Browsing through the extensive flavours I decided to go for a Dark Roast – ‘Army of Dark Chocolate’ – and a Medium Roast – ‘Salted Caramel’. When the bags arrived, I was impressed by the quality of the packaging and the eye-catching illustrations on the front. ‘Army of Dark Chocolate’ pays homage to ‘Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness’ while ‘Salted Caramel’ depicts a skeleton pirate on the deck of a ship carrying chunks of delicious salted caramel. A lot of thought has clearly gone into these designs and a quick look over their website shows that each pack is crafted with love and care.
Each of the bags states that the coffee is ‘Naturally & Artificially Flavored’ and the beans are 100% Brazilian Arabica sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified Farms. Before you even open the bag, there’s a ‘squeeze and sniff’ mechanism on the back so you can experience the coffee before you try it. I really liked this part of the bag design and you get a really good whiff of the coffee inside. Once you open the bags, the strong smell of the coffee hits you immediately. I went for the ground coffee and these flavours are ground fairly coarsely. After popping some into my cafetière and adding boiling water, I left it to brew for 20 minutes before pouring a cup.
So what’s the coffee like? Let’s start with the ‘Salted Caramel’. Impressively the coffee has a rich flavour that isn’t too sweet. There’s a deliciously bitter edge to the coffee that hits once the salted caramel notes pass your palate. The coffee is full-bodied for a medium roast and it smells absolutely divine. You can play around with the strength to get it to your liking, but however you enjoy it, the ‘Salted Caramel’ flavour is a real winner. This is the kind of coffee you can have at any time of the day.
‘Army of Dark Chocolate’ is classed as a Dark Roast and it’s stronger than ‘Salted Caramel’. Having said that, I found this flavour a lot smoother. The flavours are more subtle and the chocolate gives the coffee a richer flavour while not being sweet. This coffee is probably best suited to those mornings you need that extra caffeine kick, whereas ‘Salted Caramel’ is more of a daily go-to kind of coffee. I should probably mention that I’m a black coffee drinker so I didn’t try either of these flavours with milk. Honestly, I think they’re best enjoyed black so you can experience the unadulterated flavours.
Bones Coffee Company has really found a niche for itself. Coffee is big business these days and being able to choose something that is personal and unique to you is attractive. Both of the flavours I tried I would buy, and I’m definitely keen to try some of the other flavours on offer. From the packaging through to the taste, this is a premium coffee product that is worth the additional spend. It’s far superior to instant coffee and I’d go as far as to say it’s a step up from coffee pods too. I was impressed by the two flavours I tried and it’s no surprise that Bones Coffee Company is building such a loyal customer base.
