Kenny Chesney named Billboard’s top Country artist of the 21st century

Kenny Chesney received a career-defining honor this week as Billboard officially named him the Top Country Artist of the 21st Century. The news arrived on the heels of a major milestone: Chesney became the first country artist to headline at Sphere in Las Vegas, launching his new tour with a string of sold-out shows at the iconic venue.

The recognition from Billboard underscores Chesney’s lasting impact on country music over the past 25 years. It also comes as he prepares to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside June Carter Cash and producer Tony Brown.

Chesney reacted with humility to the announcement, saying, “No one gets up to go the gym and expects to see news like this on their phone. All I was ever trying to do was find the best possible songs, things that spoke to the heart of how No Shoes Nation lives – and then taking that music, those albums that were slices of my life out to everyone who wanted to come out, be a part of the shows, the moments and the memories we made in every city we played.”

From his beginnings in college bars to headlining NFL stadiums and now the groundbreaking Sphere, Chesney’s music has transcended venues and generations. Known for blending country with a rock edge, he’s built a reputation as one of the most beloved touring artists in any genre.

With 33 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Country Airplay chart—the most since the chart began—and nine albums topping the all-genre Billboard 200, Chesney’s influence is undeniable. All 17 of his albums released in the 21st century have topped Billboard’s Country Albums chart.

Beyond the numbers, Chesney has collaborated with a wide range of artists that reflect his broad musical vision. His duet partners have included Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews, Grace Potter, P!nk, the Wailers, Uncle Kracker, and Jimmy Buffett, among others.

Billboard’s Jim Asker noted, “Kenny Chesney rules as the No. 1 country act on Billboard’s recap of the first 25 years of the 21st century. The ranking is based on performance on the weekly Top Country Albums and Hot Country Songs charts from the start of 2000 through the end of 2024.”

Chesney’s blend of heartfelt ballads and laid-back beach anthems continues to strike a chord with fans across the country. His place at the top of Billboard’s 21st-century list cements a legacy that has shaped modern country music and inspired a generation of artists and fans alike.
