The Folio Society releasing limited edition of Robert Holdstock’s ‘Mythago Wood’

Fantasy fans and book collectors: The Folio Society is to unveil a breathtaking limited edition of ‘Mythago Wood', Robert Holdstock’s seminal work of British fantasy. This marks the first-ever fully illustrated version of the novel, with incredible artwork by legendary fantasy illustrator John Howe—best known for his iconic work on ‘The Lord of the Rings' and ‘The Rings of Power'.

Capped at just 500 copies, this collector’s edition breathes new visual life into Holdstock’s visionary tale. Set in post-war England, ‘Mythago Wood' transports readers into the mysterious Ryhope Wood, where ancient archetypes — mythagos — emerge from the collective unconscious. Rich in Celtic lore and psychological depth, the novel has earned a place alongside the likes of Tolkien and Lord Dunsany as a cornerstone of modern fantasy literature. It even snagged the prestigious World Fantasy Award.

The Folio Society's lavish new edition, set for release on 20th May 2025, is packed with features that collectors will love: 39 integrated black-and-white illustrations, five colour plates, custom printed endpapers, and a slipcase design—all created by Howe himself. Each copy is signed by the artist, making it a true treasure for enthusiasts of fantasy fiction and fine bookmaking alike.

Howe also contributes an exclusive foreword, offering personal insight into his creative process and his connection to Holdstock’s work. The two were close friends, and that affection is evident in the deeply atmospheric illustrations that echo the haunting mystique of Ryhope Wood.

Robert Holdstock’s widow, Sarah Biggs, shared her thoughts on this special release. “Rob adored Folio editions, and his bookshelves are still lined with these exquisite jewels. At a quick glance, his collection was wide-ranging and somewhat esoteric including such volumes as The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, The Canterbury Tales, Perrault’s Fairy Tales, British Myths and Legends, Ovid’s The Art of Love and Brief Lives by John Aubrey – and this is just a tiny handful of the many beautiful Folio volumes that he kept and treasured. He would have been more than honoured and delighted to know that Folio was publishing Mythago Wood with the special illustrations by his good friend, John Howe. I just wish he could be here to celebrate it!”
