With less than a week until Christmas, most people aren’t thinking about their diets or what they’re going to eat and drink over the festive period. For many, including fitness obsessives, December is a month where you loosen your belt, indulge and plan to get back to your usual routine in January. As is always the case, at this time of year there’s a flood of books and fitness DVDs released to capitalise on the ‘New Year, New You’ ethos that’s so prevalent. Scott Harrison, founder of ‘The Six Pack Revolution’, is throwing his hat into the ring with his new book ‘High Protein Meals in Minutes’.
As the old saying goes, abs are made in the kitchen and ‘High Protein Meals in Minutes’ aims to help you make more informed choices about the meals you make and consume. Before you get to the recipes, Harrison outlines his approach to fitness and nutrition, explaining his ‘Six Pack Code’. There’s information on taking a balanced approach to your diet too along with his take on calorie counting. Perhaps the most valuable part of the first chapter is Harrison’s guide to swapping out foods, if you don’t like them, and meal prep. Both of these are important for anyone serious about getting into shape.
Once you’ve worked through the science and theory part of the book, it’s time to dive into the recipes. The first section is ‘Meals’, which is packed with ideas of what you can eat for your main meals throughout any given day. What I particularly liked about the recipes here, is that Harrison doesn’t demonise any foods and there’s plenty of variety. Whether it’s fish (‘Parsley and Lemon Skate with Pea Mash’) or meat (‘Chicken Breast in a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce’) you want, there are plenty of ides. With vegetarian options too such as ‘Creamy Lentil and Chickpea Curry’ and ‘Chickpea Tagine’, the book feels inclusive.
Even better, these recipes are super quick and easy-to-follow. You don’t have to spend hours hunting down random ingredients – everything here can be easily found in your local supermarket and at pretty affordable prices too. The idea that you need money to eat healthily is simply not true.
Harrison’s easy style continues in the ‘Snacks’ chapter which contains a mix of smoothies, pancakes, omelettes and cakes. You should be able to satisfy your sweet tooth with the ideas featured here such as ‘Chocolate and Pear Crumble’ and ‘Chunky Monkey Cake’.
The final section of book contains 11 challenges. These are workout routines to add to your daily exercise regime, that complement the recipes in this book. From fully body workouts to kettlebell exercises and stretches, Harrison gives you step-by-step guides to maximising your workouts. If you’re new to exercise, these challenges will be good to try but if you’re quite experienced, you’ll probably not need them!
‘High Protein Meals in Minutes’ is a good book to add to your collection if you’re wanting to get on a health kick in 2025. It’s probably best-suited to those who are fairly new to exercise and working out, and it’ll give you the basic principles you need to get on the right track. The book should be used in conjunction with any existing workout plan you have and if meal inspiration is what you’re after, this is a good place to start!
