Store owner Rebecca (Kristin Wollett) is known for her festive wreaths and her business is thrown into jeopardy when she slips on the ice and hurts her arm. Reluctantly she agrees to let her neighbour Jason (Casey Elliott), whose family owns a local bakery, help her so that she doesn’t fall behind in the run-up to Christmas. With both Rebecca and Jason having already formed opinions of one another, the two start to realise that maybe their preconceptions were wrong. Could there be something more than burgeoning friendship there between the two?
Christmas may be over two months away but Great American Family is getting into the spirit early by kicking off their Great American Christmas season. The first film of the annual festive celebration is ‘Christmas Wreaths and Ribbons’ by writer and director Brittany Wiscombe, and it’s like a warm cup of cocoa for the soul. Even though the storyline will be familiar – two people who seemingly dislike one another coming together and realising they were wrong – the film is a solid example of what a festive film should be. It’s packed with heart, it’s wonderfully wholesome and the set design is truly gorgeous.

As is always with the case with holiday movies, the audience is waiting to see how the two leads come to realise they’re falling for each other. Rebecca is stubborn and strongly opinionated, refusing to believe her wreaths could be made any way other than how she makes them, while Jason is battling his own family’s ambitions for him, and their prejudices against Rebecca. Their initial attempt to work together proves to be uncomfortable, but a revelation from Rebecca later on in the film explains why she’s unable to let go of control.
While the storyline might not deviate too far away from what you expect, there are some nice little aspects to enjoy. Jason’s relationship with his family, particularly his sister and mother who are competing with their peppermint pie recipes, adds a nice dimension, while Rebecca has her friend Angie (Sabrina Cofield) as a sounding board when she becomes frustrated.

The film’s two leads – Kristin Wollett and Casey Elliott – are superb. They foster a believable chemistry that enables you to believe their characters dislike one another, and win you over as their feelings begin to soften. Both actors give energetic and enthusiastic performances, and they are really great together on screen. You’ll be rooting for Rebecca and Jason to get together the minute you meet them both.
‘Christmas Wreaths and Ribbons’ is a wonderful way to kick-off Great American Christmas 2024. With two winning leads and a heartwarming story, I’m already feeling ready to put up my decorations, crank up the Christmas music and embrace the holidays. With plenty more original movies to come between now and Christmas, Great American Family is already serving up a huge treat and I suggest you make some time to cosy up and watch ‘Christmas Wreaths and Ribbons’.
