When the Arkansassy vocal powerhouse Fancy Hagood performed for the first time at Country to Country in March 2024, the packed crowd around the O2’s spotlight stage stilled as we devoured ten minutes of sublime music.
It’s no surprise that we chose singer-songwriter Hagood as the C2C24 breakout artist at EF Country. Hagood also stole the stages at CMA Fest later in June and this month is on his first headline tour in the UK, starting in London on 9th September.
Here are five songs we can’t wait to hear live across the upcoming run…
5. Through
New music from Hagood’s upcoming second album is almost guaranteed to be played on the UK and Europe tour, and I absolutely can’t wait to hear ‘Through’ the first single, released in June. The uplifting, soaring melody and acoustic guitar is the perfect backdrop to stunning vocals. Hope and gratitude are the themes with a resoundingly addictive chorus sent from above, “This is for the lost and the brokenhearted/let yourself feel, get the healing started…no way out, only way is through”.
4. From This Moment On
We’re not the only ones playing the summer EP, ‘Smothered, Covered and Fried', on repeat, are we? The five legendary covers have beautiful arrangements, and it was a difficult choice to land on just one for this list. But it’s the Shania classic ‘From This Moment On’, a contender for my Spotify song of 2024, that nudged out ‘Hell on Heels’. And while it would be incredible to see TJ Osborne return the favour and join Fancy on stage next week (even if there is a gap in the Brothers Osborne tour schedule) I just want to hear this version live and live the moment.
3. Casanova
One of three songs chosen for this list, from Hagood’s debut album, ‘Southern Curiosity', released in 2021, the upbeat ‘Casanova’ tells of the battle between head and body when you meet Mr So-Right-He’s-Wrong. Fun, relatable and unapologetic; so Fancy.
2. Mr Atlanta
Equally at home with a ballad or an upbeat song, because of the strength of the storytelling, ‘Southern Curiosity’s ‘Mr Atlanta’ shares the lessons learned from previous relationships that clear the path for the one you want to fall in love with, with delicious geographical lyrical ability.
1. Don’t Blink
Easily a favourite Hagood song at C2C24, the choral, feel-good track, ‘Don’t Blink’ reminds us to take part in everyday life, “Don’t blink or you could miss it/Slow dancin’ in the kitchen”, and is the best introduction to the control and enigmatic vocals of the Nashville-based artist. Happy to hear at least twice a night, if possible?
