Celebrated singer-songwriter Chase Rice is set to release his new independent album, Go Down Singin’ on September 20. Following the success of his 2023 album ‘I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell' which Billboard hailed as “one of 2023’s most unexpected artistic pivots,” Rice continues to delve into personal and introspective themes with this new project. Fans can pre-order and pre-save the album now.
The cover art for ‘Go Down Singin’' mirrors that of ‘I Hate Cowboys,' featuring a recreated image of Rice’s late father holding two Coors Banquets, paying tribute to the man who greatly influenced his life and music.
Reflecting on his journey, Rice considers this 11-song collection an important milestone. “I’m 38 now, and I’ve journaled since I was 15 years old, but there’s something about being able to tell other people. I’m a deep person, but I don’t know how to show it in real life, so I’m trying to do it in my music,” Rice says. “Go Down Singin’ is everything about where I am and what I want. I’m starting to see myself as who I want to be, not who I thought I should be. That’s a good start. And I think a lot of men struggle with this stuff, too.”
Rice's journey from co-writing ‘Cruise,' one of country music’s biggest hits, to facing personal challenges and soul-searching has shaped his latest work. Collaborating once again with producer Oscar Charles, the album’s sound is grounded in real instruments, reflecting Rice’s honest and mature approach to songwriting.
Rice candidly discusses his past influences and struggles. “For one record, I thought I was Ed Sheeran. For one, I thought I was Florida Georgia Line. I was 22. I got into the party scene, I got lost. I didn’t know. I was very influenced by Eric Church and wanted to be like him, though mostly, I was just so confused. You fall into things, being in the studio, and you look back…”
Among the notable collaborations on the album is three-time GRAMMY winner Lori McKenna, who recognized Rice's potential and vulnerability. “I just had Chase Rice over here, who I had not known. His last record has a song called ‘Bench Seat.’ I think it’s like a masterclass in songwriting, and he wrote it by himself,” McKenna told Billboard. Together, they co-wrote four songs on the album, including ‘Oh Tennessee' which Rice describes as a reflection on his move to Nashville and the ups and downs of his journey.
“Go Down Singin’” is an album about growth and self-discovery, marked by Rice’s willingness to confront his past and strive to become the person his father believed he could be. “I’m a fuck up, and I know it,” Rice admits. “But I’m trying. I mean, my favorite story in the Bible is David, who sends his best friend off to war, so he can be with his friend’s wife… I was a lost kid who lost his Dad. I’m not alone. I know lots of people struggle, too. The last record dealt with that loss, and this one is about taking all that and becoming who you’re meant to be.”
