Celine Dion – ‘I Am: Celine Dion’ (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) review: all the hits are right here

The music world was shocked in December 2022 when Celine Dion, one of the world’s most successful vocalists, announced that she had been diagnosed with the rare neurological disease stiff-person syndrome. The remaining dates of her world tour were cancelled and Dion took herself out of the spotlight while she sought medical assistance, and battled hard to find a way to continue performing. In recent months Dion has been seen in public again and with her reappearance came the announcement of her new documentary ‘I Am: Celine Dion’, a Prime Video film that documents her health battle.

Released on Tuesday 25th June 2024 on the streaming platform, ‘I Am: Celine Dion’ is, of course, accompanied by a soundtrack. The 20-track collection is essentially a greatest hits compilation with 7 tracks from the score (mainly composed by Redi Hasa) scattered throughout. The score tracks are pleasant enough creating emotive moods and provided thoughtful breaks, but they aren’t why Dion’s fans will flock to this soundtrack.

Fans of Dion will know full well what to expect from this soundtrack. The 13 Dion tracks have been pulled from across her long and successful career. Starting with her international breakthrough hit, a cover of Jennifer Rush’s ‘The Power of Love’, the soundtrack perfectly highlights the unmatched vocal prowess that Dion possesses. Most of the songs here – ‘A New Day Has Come’, ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ and ‘My Heart Will Go On’ – will be well worn to fans who have been playing them for decades. Perhaps the soundtrack’s most interesting inclusions are the grossly underrated ‘Deadpool 2’ soundtrack song ‘Ashes’ and the more recently released ‘Love Again’, from the film of the same name which Dion starred in.

The most poignant moment though comes on ‘I’m Alive’, a song that’s already enoying a resurgence thanks to a dance remix by Majestic x The Jammin Kid x Céline Dion. Knowing the struggle Dion has been going through, this song has a new emotional layer that it didn’t have when it was first released. It now feels like an anthem for overcoming adversity and fighting for your life.

‘I Am: Celine Dion’ is a timely reminder of the power of Dion as a vocalist and an artist. Her voice is unparalleled and there’ll never be anyone else like her. Fans who have closely followed her career across the decades will have most, if not all, of these songs in their collection already. Dion has released several greatest hits collections during her career so there’s not much reason here for fans to pick up this release. Having said that, casual fans may appreciate a selection of the star’s most iconic songs and I’m sure fans will flock to support the icon as she attempts to return to the stage in an upcoming new show in Las Vegas (which has been teased, but not confirmed).
