The song is a tribute to Dean’s late childhood dog, Carl, and is available on all major streaming platforms. “We had Carl since he could fit in the palm of my hand,” Dean reminisces. “I was thinking about him, all the adventures we went on together, and all the times he’d been there for me. He was just a damn good dog, and I wanted to write a song with a really big sound to do his personality justice.” Despite the bittersweet inspiration, ‘Big Blue Sky' carries a sense of joy, especially as Dean watches his band tear it up on stage in homage to Carl.

Dean and his Maryland-native bandmates—Brandon Aksteter, Rich Kolm, and Sean Mercer—penned ‘Big Blue Sky' in the backseat of their old 12-passenger van, “Bernadette,” while en route to a gig. The song quickly became a staple in their live sets, resonating deeply with audiences.
The accompanying video, filmed near the Tongue River outside Sheridan, WY, features Dean and his rescue pup, Elk, amidst the breathtaking landscape. Named after being found near the Elk Lodge in East Nashville, Elk has become Dean’s road companion, making him the perfect co-star to honor Carl’s legacy.
