Sheryl Crow Tells Apple Music That Life Has Forced Her Into Detours in the Pastā€¦

I’ve been forced into detours that I wasn’t ready to take. Definitely before I made the ā€˜Detoursā€™ record, my life totally shifted from being engaged with stepkids, to getting cancer, to like, “Okay, let’s rethink this whole thing.” And I took a year away from … I didn’t even write a word. I didn’t go to my songwriting, like, “Oh, I’m going to just download it all into songs and they’re going to be great songs.” And there was none of that. It was like, “No, you’re putting that away. This is life stuff.” So… it was great.

Sheryl Crow Tells Apple Music That Going Through Radiation Changed the Way She Performsā€¦

Because up to that point, I’d gone through so many years of touring that I’d gotten to a place where I wanted the lights dark on the audience, so I wasn’t seeing people’s reactions to things. And after I got radiated, I wanted to see every face. It just totally changed everything. It made me want to connect with every single person on a soul level, and it was good.

Sheryl Crow Tells Apple Music That Getting Sick Forced Her to Reevaluate Prioritiesā€¦

For me, I had always taken care of everybody in my life first. The flight attendant comes on and says, “All right, you need to put on your oxygen mask before you put on your child’s.” Well, I put masks on every person before myself. And just being forced to have everything stop, whether you like it or not. You kind of have to look at, “Okay, this is something that I’m doing and it’s not serving me. In fact, so much so that I’m sick now.” And just little things that you go, “Okay, I was not going to get this lesson until the second I got it.” And I think I got it now.

Sheryl Crow Shares with Apple Music How She Maintains Her Mental Healthā€¦

I think I’ve been pretty open and honest about my own mental health, my own struggles. I still battle what I call melancholia, even last week. I have to actually tell my kids, “Look, I’m grappling with some lowness, so just know that if my face doesn’t look happy, it is not a reflection of you.” And I have to really work at not letting the bottom drop out. I do a lot of meditating. That’s been a real game-changer for me. I’ve been doing it for 27 years, mindfulness, meditation. And yeah. Life is hard. Being alive is hardā€¦ It is joyful, it is mind-blowing, it is challenging. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s everything. And I don’t want to be somebody who doesn’t feel it.
