Since ‘Neighbours‘ burst back onto our screens in September, you’d be hard pressed to find a nicer character than Haz Devkar (Shiv Palekar).
Sure he’s had his moments such as messing Holly (Lucinda Armstrong Hall) around and he hit out at his friends when he had to (briefly) give up Trevor, but generally he’s one of the nicest characters on the show. A blossoming romance with Mack (Georgie Stone) suggested that he was heading to a happy place in his personal life but his behaviour the past few weeks has fans wondering what on earth is going on.
After Harold’s was targeted and smashed up, the street rallied around Haz to help him get his shop back on its feet. It was then revealed to viewers that it was Haz himself that smashed up the shop and he was caught on video doing it.
Since then Haz’s behaviour has become progressively odder. He’s argued with Mack over having security cameras installed in Harold’s, he’s dragged his feet about putting in his insurance claim and he’s been listening in to the conversations of his friends without their knowledge.
This week saw him send a deep fake video of Jane (Annie Jones) behaving inappropriately to all of her students. We also suspect he’s behind David’s (Takaya Honda) call to Aaron (Matt Wilson) from beyond the grave. Have we misjudged Haz for the past few months or is there something else going on?
Is Haz being blackmailed?
Perhaps the strongest theory is that Haz is being blackmailed. We’ve no idea why he smashed up Harold (if indeed the video was genuine) but we do know that someone has the footage ready to spread around. The easiest explanation is that Haz is trying to cover up his own behaviour by doing what he’s told to keep a blackmailer quiet. But we’re still left wondering why he would smash up his own shop?
Does Haz have an evil twin?
This theory is gaining traction on ‘Neighbours’ fan groups and give the show is a soap, we guess anything is possible. Haz has been incredibly cagey, and inconsistent, when it comes to talking about his family. He’s told Byron (Xavier Molyneux) and Mack totally different things, and he always shuts the conversation down. Is he trying to keep an evil twin brother secret? Or wilder yet, is it his evil twin that’s causing all this chaos?
Could Haz have a split personality?
If we discount the first two theories, there’s an argument to be had that Haz has a split personality. We’re not 100% convinced about this given there’s been no warning signs but that doesn’t mean it can’t be true.
