How Ocean’s Eleven’s Legacy Continues to Live On

Lewis Milestone, the film’s director and producer, drew the inspiration for this movie from Harry Brown and Charles Lederer’s screenplay based on George Clayton and Jack Russell’s story. Joey Bishop, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford are among the five Rat Pack members who appear in the film along with an ensemble cast.

The film also features other cast members, including Cesar Romeo, Henry Silva, Richard Conte and many others. It was shot at the Flamingo, Sahara, Desert Inn, Sands and Riviera hotels, with another segment shot at the former Las Vegas Union Pacific station. The scenes at the opening barber shop and Spyros Acebos’s house were shot in Beverly Hills. 

Premiering on August 3, 1960, the movie became the origin of the Ocean’s film series, which has continued to inspire multitudes worldwide. 

The Ocean Trilogy Adaptation

In 2001, Steven Soderbergh directed the “Ocean’s Eleven” movie, a remake of the 1960’s Lewis Milestone’s film. It featured renowned characters like George Clooney, Bernie Mac, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, etc. The film became a major success, garnering over $450.7 million globally and became 2001’s fifth-highest-grossing film.  It was then followed by two sequels, “Ocean’s Twelve” in 2004 and “Ocean’s Thirteen” in 2007, which were all directed by Soderbergh and made up the “Ocean’s Trilogy”.

Ocean’s captivating storyline, which is set around Las Vegas casinos, is one of the reasons why we see many filmmakers and other content creators going back to it. It’s now common for filmmakers to not only draw from already existing works but also integrate these works with contemporary life to make the plots more appealing and current. Intending to return to the Ocean’s franchise, George Clooney indicated that a script for a sequel to “Ocean’s Thirteen” was already completed and would be similar to Going in Style. According to Collider.com, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have confirmed they will feature in an “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel film set in 1960s Europe. 

The Influence Continues

In 2018, Garry Ross directed “Ocean’s 8”, a spin-off and the fourth instalment of the Ocean’s series. The film was praised for its unmatched ensemble cast and became a commercial success, grossing approximately $298 million worldwide. Interestingly, as researchers on tandfonline.com delve into, Takarazuka Revue adapted the 2001 film as a musical with Troupe performing the production alongside Reon Yuzuki, Nene Yumesaki and Shio Suzumi.

The Ocean’s franchise also inspires filmmakers from other sectors, including Bollywood. Farah Khan directed an Indian action comedy film, “Happy New Year”, whose plot heavily relied upon “Ocean’s Eleven”. “Happy New Year” was a great success and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films, with over $64.56 million in revenues.

Overall, “Ocean’s 11” is a testament to what an engaging plot can do. Such storylines remain a lifetime inspiration for content creators not only in the film industry but also in other sectors.
