Katie Pruitt teases new album with the powerful ‘White Lies, White Jesus and You’

Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and musician Katie Pruitt is set to release her long-awaited album, ‘Mantras,’ on April 5 through Rounder Records. The album, available for pre-order and pre-save here, marks Pruitt’s first release in five years and promises to be her most personal work to date.

Leading up to the album launch, Pruitt has released a captivating new track titled ‘White Lies, White Jesus and You’ along with its official music video directed by Alexa King Stone and Stephen Kinigopoulos. We can easily say that we think ‘White Lies, White Jesus and You’ is the best new song we have heard in 2024 so far. What a powerful look at religion and when the song breaks out – boy, what a vibe!

Reflecting on the track, Pruitt shares, “I wrote ‘White Lies, White Jesus & You’ about shedding any remaining shame associated with the church. It’s an intentional protest song rejecting the narrative that the Bible’s purpose is to gate-keep or oppress. I hope it serves as a reminder to anyone who has ever been hurt by religion, that spirituality is yours to define for yourself and no institution can take that away from you.”

Produced by Jake Finch and Collin Pastore, renowned for their work with boygenius and Lucy Dacus, ‘Mantras’ delves into Pruitt’s complex relationships with family, religion, and her own mind. The eleven-track album, which includes the previously released song ‘Blood Related,’ showcases Pruitt’s introspective songwriting at new heights.

To support the album release, Pruitt will embark on an extensive headline tour this spring, featuring stops in major cities such as Atlanta, Dallas, Austin, Denver, Seattle, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, among others. Ticket pre-sale for the new dates begins next Thursday, January 18 at 10:00am local time, with general on-sale following on Friday, January 19 at 10:00am local time. Complete tour details can be found here.

The impressive lineup of musicians contributing to ‘Mantras’ includes Maggie Chaffee (strings), Dave Cohen (keys), Anthony Da Costa (guitar), Kris Donegan (guitar), Laura Epling (strings), Camille Faulkner (strings), Will Honaker (guitar, keys), Taylor Ivey (bass), Kevin McGowan (drums), and Johnny Williamson (guitar).

Following the success of her debut album, “Expectations,” Pruitt has continued to receive acclaim, with NPR Morning Edition praising her “clarity of expression and disarming intimacy.” Rolling Stone hailed her as a “soaring vocalist and agile guitarist,” and Pitchfork declared her debut as “deeply thoughtful and unified.”

Originally from the Atlanta suburbs, Pruitt has established herself as a rising star in the music industry. She has been recognized as a Rolling Stone “Artist You Need To Know” and featured in NPR Music’s “Slingshot: 20 Artists To Watch.” Pruitt has also graced the stages of CBS Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions” series and NPR Music’s “Tiny Desk (Home Concert)” series.
