James Bond ‘Casino Royale’ – Reviewed

‘Casino Royale’ started life as a novel written by British author Ian Fleming. It was published in 1953 as the first book in the James Bond series.

The novel introduced the world to the iconic British espionage hero also known by his code number 007.

The story of ‘Casino Royale’ features James Bond’s mission to overcome a Soviet agent named Le Chiffre. In this fictional world, Le Chiffre is a secret agent, a high-end gamer and a financial manipulator for SMERSH, a Soviet counterintelligence agency.

Bond’s mission is focussed on beating Le Chiffre at a high-stakes game of baccarat at the Casino Royale in Montenegro. The outcome of the game could have significant consequences for both sides in the Cold War.

The novel was a great success. Among Bond’s suave and sophisticated demeanour, his penchant for casino gaming, and his interactions with women, he is shown as a complex and human character, with flaws and vulnerabilities.

The female character Vesper Lynd, another British government agent, plays a crucial role in the story and has an inevitable impact on Bond’s emotional state. ‘Casino Royale’ marked the beginning of a successful literary series that became an even greater cinematic franchise.

The novel’s popularity led to the creation of the first film adaptation in 1967 – a satirical take on the story starring British romantic actor David Niven.

A more successful film adaptation was released in 2006, starring Daniel Craig as Bond. The film marked the renewal of a rather tired Bond film series, adding more depth, quality and backstory.

As well as the film versions, the story has been adapted for radio dramas, comic books, and video games. Casino Royale has become a significant and enduring part of popular culture across several generations.

How good was ‘Casino Royale’ 2006?

The 2006 version of ‘Casino Royale’ marked a significant point in the James Bond film series, as it marks Daniel Craig taking on the lead role.

The film is a more faithful adaptation of the original novel, focusing on Bond’s early career and his first mission as an 00 agent.

The story follows James Bond as he tackles a mission to bankrupt Le Chiffre, a high-stakes gamer and terrorist financier. This takes place in a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro.

This isn’t the venue for a quick casual session on Cleopatra slots, this is a deliberately high-end glamorous and glittering casino venue.

Bond is aided by Vesper Lynd, a British agent responsible for overseeing the treasury funds Bond needs for the poker game. Bond and Vesper navigate a web of intrigue, danger, and betrayal – and inevitably they find themselves drawn to each other.

The film reaches into Bond’s emotional vulnerabilities and director Martin Campbell gives a grittier and more realistic portrayal of the character compared to previous films. Craig starred as James Bond, Eva Green as Vesper Lynd, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre.

The movie marked a departure from the fantastical gadget-driven Bond films with a more grounded, intense, and realistic approach. There was even a new style of title sequence with fluid animations.

Nevertheless there were still several classic action sequences, including the introductory parkour chase scene, the high-stakes poker game, and the climactic showdown on a sinking building.

‘Casino Royale’ was well-received by critics and audiences. Craig’s portrayal of Bond was seen as refreshing, bringing a new layer of depth to the character. Action sequences were also praised for their intensity and realism.

The film’s darker and more serious tone was seen as a successful advance on previous more flippant Bond storylines.

The key scene – in the casino

The casino sequence was a centerpiece of the film’s plot. Bond aims to outplay Le Chiffre at the poker table. The British government has provided Bond with $10 million to buy into the game and Vesper Lynd is tasked with overseeing these funds.

The scene is full of tension as Bond and Le Chiffre engage in a psychological battle across the poker table. The stakes are incredibly high, not just in terms of money, but also in terms of the mission to thwart Le Chiffre’s plans.

Bond and Le Chiffre attempt to read each other’s facial expressions to gauge the strength of their hands. The scene showcases Bond’s ability to maintain composure under pressure.

The ‘Casino Royale’ casino scene has since become iconic. It is usually quoted as the standout moment in the film.

The scene not only shows the film’s departure from the light hearted elements of previous Bond films but also highlights the character’s evolution into a more psychologically complex figure.

It’s a masterfully crafted sequence that uses tension, strategy, and character dynamics to create a pivotal moment. It demonstrates that ‘Casino Royale’ wasn’t just another Bond film – it was one of the greatest films of that genre ever produced.
