‘Our Christmas Wedding’ review

Great American Family fans no doubt remember the 2021 movie ‘My Boss’ Wedding’, which saw personal assistant Nicole Waters (Holly Deveaux) plan the wedding of her boss Kimberly (Brigitte Kingsley) and in the process fall in love with the groom’s (Landy Cannon) nephew Michael (Drew Seeley). Two years on and Nicole and Michael are back in sequel ‘Our Christmas Wedding’, which turns the tables on the storyline from the first movie. This time instead of planning a wedding, it’s Nicole that’s getting married and her boss Kimberly is intent on planning the big day for her.

I’ll start off by saying that I’m not entirely sure I needed to see a sequel to ‘My Boss’ Wedding’ but it is a treat to see Holly Deveaux and Drew Seeley back together on screen. This film stays firmly in its comfort zone mixing light comedy with romance as Nicole battles her work schedule and an important presentation, with her commitments to her wedding and making time for Michael. Kimberly proves to be fairly pushy, planning the wedding that she thinks Nicole and Michael should be having, rather than the one that the two of them wanted. That inevitably causes friction and Nicole’s dedication to her work, while Michael is trying to write a new song, threatens to pull the couple apart.

The biggest problem with ‘Our Christmas Wedding’ is that it feels a little too familiar. The storyline isn’t a million miles away from the first one and although it switches the plot, it’s not really enough to warrant this being its own film. There are some nice moments along the way, mostly between Nicole and Michael, but large parts of the film are just watching Nicole trying to juggle everything and failing miserably. There’s a lesson in there somewhere about priorities and doing the right thing, but it’s not strong enough to rise above the material.

Thankfully Holly Deveaux and Drew Seeley definitely do rise above the material. They are both very good actors, they work well together and honestly, they deserve better material than this. Because they are so good together, you’ll likely see the film through to its abrupt end but they really are the best thing about it.

‘Our Christmas Wedding’ is pure fluff. It’s not trying to change the world and it’s not going to teach you anything about life that you don’t already know. That’s not necessarily a problem and fans of the original movie will no doubt find plenty to enjoy here. Deveaux and Seeley are strong as the leads and that will be enough to carry the film for most people. I will say that, I don’t think we need another sequel but I have a feel ‘Our Christmas Baby’ could be in the future somewhere.
