‘Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe’ review

Occasionally in life, a film comes along that’s so utterly bizarre that it leaves you speechless. ‘Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe’, released today by TLA Releasing, is one such film. Father Andy Gaylord (Rodrigo Garcia Alves) is intent on denying his true sexuality and his ex-lover Queen Bitch (Bishop Black), an alien from another planet, is hellbent on making Earth homosexual. Into the fray steps Captain Faggotron (Tchivett) who finds himself caught in the middle and tries to stop Queen Bitch’s plan.

‘Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe’ is the kind of film I imagine a writer comes out with when they’re tripping on too many drugs. Film-maker Harvey Rabbit has created a film that’s so incredibly random that trying to find a coherent story amidst the chaos is actually impossible. The brightly coloured film whizzes by on its own giddiness, not once stopping to consider whether the material might be penetrable by the audience. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a bonkers film as much as the next guy but this one doesn’t hit the mark.

The paper-thin premise seems to be an excuse for Rabbit to get his actors to partake in increasingly lewd scenes that aim to shock. In one scene Captain Faggotron and Queen Bitch are deep-throating hot dogs while the vendor looks on (and gets turned on). Not only is the scene stomach churning, watching two grown men playing with their food, it’s just not very funny or nearly as inventive as it thinks it is.

Normally in a review I’d comment on the acting but it’s universally bad across the board. Not a single member of the cast turns in a performance that’s even passable unfortunately. They, like me while watching it, seemed to be just as bewildered about what was going on.

Perhaps ‘Captain Faggotron Saves the Universe’ simply isn’t for me but I found this film a real chore to get through. The animated segment towards the end was at least visually interesting but the film as a whole did absolutely nothing for me. It felt more like an attempt to create something controversial by a film student than a genuine parody of gay culture.
