Rachel Fairburn – ‘Showgirl’ review

Rachel Fairburn is keeping the magic of live comedy alive and well with her tour of Showgirl.

This is an offering that is right at home in a plethora of venues spanning opera houses to high street comedy club basements.

Before the glamour and sparklers take hold, we’re grounded in the space with a pre-show introduction where Rachel sets the scene with the same vibe as ‘pre-drinks’ with the girls before a night out, at the very reasonable time of 7pm.

What sets this show apart is the mix of universal observations and wit that feel very strongly rooted in 2023, where Showgirl becomes the glue that binds us all together again. It’s a show that is a stroke of creative genius, that can be framed in geography of place and time – from Liverpool to Stafford.

Without giving away too many show spoilers, we are taken on a boundless backdrop of Rachel’s life framed to answer the question of how Rachel found herself in comedy against the odds.

Credit is given to men who troll the comic on her social platforms; her working-class roots with props to the Blair years; her hunter-gatherer supermarket spirit and, her biggest creative critic – her mum – who sees self-expression as attention-seeking.

A vibrant comedy lens that shoots for the moon with laser-sharp wit makes this show the perfect warm-up to a nostalgic night out on the tiles.

Rachel co-hosts the worldwide smash hit podcast All Killa No Filla alongside Kiri Pritchard-McLean, which has over 250,000 regular listeners and has had several sell-out UK live runs and a US tour to date. On TV, Rachel has appeared on programmes including BBC Presents: Stand Up For Live Comedy (BBC One), Funny Festival Live (BBC Two), Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled (Dave) and Russell Howard Hour (Sky Max).

Rachel Fairburn – ‘Showgirl’ runs until 26th November 2023 at venues across the UK. Tickets are priced at £13.50-£16.50. For more information and to book tour tickets, visit https://www.mcintyre-ents.com/live_shows/rachel-fairburn-showgirl/
