Jordan Davis Eventim Apollo Hammersmith, London live review

Louisiana-born singer-songwriter Jordan Davis made a splash in Country music with his debut single Singles You Up, which topped the US Country Airplay chart and hit Platinum. The track was the first to be lifted from his 2018 debut album Home State and it paved the way for follow-up hits Take It From Me and Slow Dancing in a Parking Lot. The buzz around Davis has travelled all the way over to the UK and he’s been top of many wish lists to tour here for a while. Last night he made his London live debut supporting Old Dominion on their Make It Sweet Tour.

Utilising an acoustic set-up for his set, Davis treated fans to nine tracks choosing highlights from Home State as well as debuting two new tracks. Opening with Tough to Tie Down, Davis brought the first of many catchy tunes to life, captivating the audience in the process. It was second track Going ‘Round that really won the audience over with Davis’ distinctive voice driving the song’s melody. Even in a more stripped-down arrangement, the song sounded fantastic and it got some audience members singing.

Current single Slow Dance in a Parking Lot was next followed by the superb hit Take It From Me. The audience were more familiar with those two songs so the sing-a-long intensified much to the obvious delight of Davis. The songs show both ends of Davis’ musical spectrum and they are among the strongest tracks on Home State. It was brilliant to finally hear them live and Davis didn’t disappoint.

The next two songs were new tracks that Davis explained would be included on his upcoming second album. The standout was the first one – I Met My Wife in a Bar – which is a personal story about meeting his significant other and he joked that he’s bad at naming songs. Sonically it fit nicely with the songs from Home State but lyrically it felt more intimate and personal.

Returning to Home State, Davis performed the closing track from the record, Leaving New Orleans, a song he has frequently cited as his favourite, before bringing the tempo back up with the infectious groove of More Than I Know. Davis ended his set with his debut single Singles You Up and by that point the audience was fully warmed up. The sing-a-long reached a new peak and Davis couldn’t have looked happier about it. It was the perfect end to a solid set that kept the Eventim Apollo crowd engaged.

Davis impressed me last night. I, as much as every other Country fan, have been keen for him to come over to the UK for a while so it was amazing to see him live. He announced on stage that he’ll be back in March for C2C: Country to Country so it’s not long until we get to see him again! Armed with strong songs and showing off his distinctive voice, Davis took his relationship with his UK fans to the next level last night.
