Mythic Ocean preview

Mythic Ocean, from Paralune, has us diving into a wondrous, vast sea in search of the Gods who run it. There’s a lot to be interested in here: the environments are calming atmospheric ocean wonderlands–there’s no threat of failure in sight. You can’t die or fight anything and exploring at your leisure is highly encouraged. Think of Mythic Ocean as a really physical graphic novel: talking and making dialog decisions is the main gameplay. You’re meant to influence through your words, and weight they will have! You can orchestrate a lovely, calm existence, or a mad house of pure pandemonium!

As with any game one sees early on, there are bound to be a few issues. Little things like mouse sensitivity (needs more of a range, there’s so much to look at and it takes a lot of time to pivot to do so!) are at the top of my list. I would like to see more characters–but I’m sure the full game won’t disappoint there. The ones you do interact with are downright hilarious: there’s an eel in there that has provided me with my favourite line in ANY video game ever. Perhaps you’ll know the chap when you see him–but don’t trust your eyes! “Your eyes are lying to you!” he’ll say!

The magic of Mythic Ocean very much lies in the exploration. There’s a lovely echolocation that doesn’t have any restrictions on it, so navigating correctly isn’t so much of a pressure and you’re able to stop and enjoy the landscape around you. There’s also the handy ability to teleport from god to god once you find them–and speaking of gods, they are incredibly original and endearing (even the more weird ones) in their design.

Mythic Ocean is going to be a lovely game to share with a little one too, if that’s you. I genuinely look forward to seeing the full release and meeting more creatures of the sea–in all of their unique splendor. Keep your eyes peeled for this one (but don’t trust them!)–because late 2019 we’ll be swimming in to change the universe.
