Lucifer proved to be a surprise hit when it debuted 2016. The 13-episode first season won over critics and viewers as it told the story of Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) aka The Devil, who abdicates his throne in Hell to live in Los Angeles working as a police consultant alongside Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). Lucifer’s brother Amenadiel (D. B. Woodside) is an angel sent to Los Angeles to force Lucifer back to Hell but the first season saw him questioning God’s orders.

The show was renewed for a 22-episode second season, which was subsequently reduced to 18 episodes when the final four episodes were removed and added to its upcoming third season. Lucifer: The Complete Second Season picks up where season one left off as Lucifer and Amenadiel try to locate their mother (Tricia Helfer), who has escaped from Hell.

The formula for Lucifer’s second season is similar to its first. Each episode takes on the form of a standard procedural as Lucifer and Chloe work together to solve murders. The series arc involves Lucifer’s and Amenadiel’s mum, who takes on the body of a murder victim and causes no end of trouble for her sons. Lucifer is initially protective of Amendiel, trying to shield him from their mother but she finds a way to get to him, resulting in Lucifer dishing out severe punishment.

The addition of Tricia Helfer this season is one that benefits the show. She clearly relishes playing Lucifer’s mum and she’s a lot of fun to watch. Her antics are what elevate the season and I actually found her storyline more engaging than the ā€˜case of the week’ elements. Tom Ellis continues to ooze charisma and it’s not hard to see why he was cast as Lucifer. He’s devilishly (pun intended) handsome and he’s a great actor to boot. I also love his chemistry with D. B. Woodside and when the two are sparring onscreen, it provides some of the show’s finest moments.

Special features on the DVD release include two featurettes, a gag reel and a selection of unaired scenes.

Lucifer remains a complete guilty pleasure in its second season. The show has improved on its first season and feels more assured. It’s never going to sweep any award shows but there is a charm to Lucifer that makes it endlessly engaging and entertaining. For me, it’s never going to be a show I have to tune into every week but it is one I’ll continue to enjoy binge-watching when it’s released on DVD.
